Crooked tip of a pruner blade, solutions?
on: February 05, 2013, 05:49:38 PM
I just received a used Rancher, and I noticed that when I open and close the pruner blade I here a slight click and some resistance, turns out the very tip of the pruner blade is a little crooked and is hiting on the back of the closed main blade.
It is not broken but I think it has lost the very pointy tip.
Any thoughts ?

The possibility of turning it into sheepsfoot comes to mind but I have no experience.
Since its my first colored alox (old cross worn gold with Bugnard stamp) I am hesitant!

Photos will come along as soon as I get the chance :D

They bend pretty easily as long as you dont repeatedly bend back and forth the blade will be ok.

I would clamp the tip in a vice, then with gentle pushes with increasing pressure the blade will bend.  Ive done this many times with electrician and pruner blades as they need a different bend if they fit in the opener layer, or with the main blade.

The first thing I would try is to wrap a bench vise with thin cloth (so as to not mark the blade) and tighten it down over the bent tip and a portion of the blade adjacent to it.  Be careful though, the bent tip is much thinner than closer to the spine of the blade.

If it doesn't fully straighten it, you can try to clamp just the bent part and CAREFULLY lever the knife to bend it back.  Be aware that the hardened stainless steel is more prone to cracking and breaking off, though.

Edit: Robert beat me to it.  He's excellent with his work, so I would follow his directions.  :salute:

Thanks for the reply Syph, and Whippy !

I mean the very end of the blade seems bend... I m afraid I ll break it if I do what u suggest.
I ll try to capture it in a photo as well as I can!
I wont hurry anyway !

Hmmm probably you are right and the best solution would be this!

Ah maybe someone was prying with it.  Depending on how far it is bent, it may break.  Ive only bent blades 5-10 degrees.

Here are some pics hopefully you get the point (sorry for the really bad quality mobile + bad photografer can lead to these results!)

1st pictures you see how the tip does not follow the body of the blade
next you see how if I just leave the bade it wont close but will rest on the back of the closed main blade

What seems to be working is bending it with my hands , I m pushing  the very tip slightly with my thumb. It s actually a bit painfull after a while, but I think the possibilityreaking are non existent since its getting straight very very slowly!!

I think after fiddling with it in 2-3 days It will be almost straight!!
