Carried it today and still don't get the Explorer.
A Ranger is like 1mm thicker but adds so much more usefullness for me. Going to look for one of those I think. Or maybe a Master Craftsman.

I think it's more about the feeling than anything else...  I feel the whole MG family is too cool... Scientist, yeoman, passenger, Explorer... Awl so rad.

Victorinox has produced and is still producing such a wonderful and wide variety of Swiss Army Knives that there is bound to be a good fit for most everybody. This is definitely not a case of one size fits all!

The Explorer is a great match for me with its tool set and the magnifier comes in handy for reading small print. If a wood or metal saw/file is needed that the Explorer is not the best fit.

I am obviously biased in favor of the Explorer and my count is now up to 27.

The files nice, the saw I already touched on briefly, these saws this size are just ok imo. But no out the front philips, or magnifying glasses... the out the front philips really is a great great feature and is proving to be amazingly useful on a SAK. All my Leathermans have a saw and file anywhoo  , so there's that. But yeah they make enough to fit everyone's needs ultimately. And if not, that's why there's modders modding

You can discern '70's and '80's by the inlay. Before '80 it was nickel-silver, after that stainless steel.

Pretty cool to find an Explorer NIB by the way. That's really cool.

Ever since I got my Explorer I know I have a soft spot for this one. I've been carrying it alongside my Handyman for the past weeks. Great SAK.

Nice grab El C!!  I love the boxes in general and really love finding them with the price tag on them or with the original receipt.

Thanks Mactire.  I think this one is probably 79-81... I assume it took a little while to use up all the old scales as it seems to take a while to phase out most of the changes.

This one is still my main one but I do have another one not pictured.  I wanted to put new scales on the other one before pics but can't decide on black, sapphire, red, ruby or another emerald set!  :)

It looks like they can be had.  Looks like these are custom made.  Price is pretty high, though

Thought I'd share this here. Got it a few weeks back. I believe this would be the first incarnation of the Explorer, notice the blank back tang.  Pretty neat.  :tu:

HELL Yes sawman
That's why I've got 3 4 of them. I made one into a "plus" with white scales..

You're obviously a man of taste - no less.
[/quote]

Did someone say Plus with white scales? I just recently went to the Explorer as my EDC over the Compact. I carried that Compact for a long time wishing it had a Phillips, adding plus scales to an older style explorer (longer screwdriver)  fit the bill perfectly.
