I do too Zed.  While the field of view is smaller, it just seems like a higher quality build.

To be honest, since they switched back to a glass lens, also for the new transparent design, I came to like the new magnifier on my explorer even more than the old one on my champion. Bigger field of view just helps a lot, I find.  ::)
I do like the older, longer Phillips on the champion more than the newer shorter one, though.

My old style magnifier Explorer got a shiny new tuxedo black Plus scale set today. Made the whole knife look brand new. :D

Woah! Great thread and photos, y'all! :dd:

The Explorer is the only SAK I EDC. The same one has been in my back pocket for over 13 years. Recently got a new set of SilverTech scales though. :) it doesn't have much snap anymore due to liner corrosion, but still works fine. Gonna metaphorically 'drive the tires off' of that one.  :)
I've got two spare Explorers as backups as well(one vintage w/o hook and one new one[shorter phillips] with hook) Will post a photo on a bit. The one I carry has the hook, but still has the grey magnifier glass mount. Great to have when the main plier-tool drivers can't be used, because the pliers are holding something.

Around 6 months ago, I ordered black Plus scales for my 2013 LE Explorer with damaged scales.

The LE then went to the Spa in Switzerland over summer, to get the broken scales fixed, and came back like new.

But as I no longer had a black Explorer, I decided to swap the top red one to black.

The Explorer was the late Carl Elsener's favorite pocket carry. And if the man that made hundreds of SAK knife models picks one as his favorite, that must count for something special.

:iagree:
Cool information! There isn't much that I would change about the Explorer. Maybe replace the small pen blade with a little file, but that would be it. Love the mag/inline phillips layer. :)

Very nice collection  :like:
Thank you, Ray!

:iagree:  I've carried a few different models, but always came back to the Explorer. It's pretty much the perfect balance of tools for my every day needs. Here's mine with the plus scales.

The hook transforms the Explorer to a comfy handle to carry 2 heavy trash bags, without cutting off the bloodstream to my fingers.
