Thanks, Barry.

Of course, the Explorer will likely seem rather small after the SwissChamp challenge.....

Nice one, Nix! The Explorer really does like black scales.  :tu:

Sharp elegance and stuff. I'm reminded of a geology professor from years ago. In hindsight, a man who might have had a black Explorer. 8)

And it does feel comfortable for its size. Something about its square profile. The inline Phillips is really nice to use. This thread has got me appreciating my (red) Explorer more and more... and thinking of changing its scales.  ;)

That reminds me of a review of the Explorer on the Victorinox site.  This gentleman is a Physics professor, I believe, who has carried a SAK since 1961 and now carries the Explorer exclusively.

I could see that being a perfect carry for a physics professor.  :tu:

Nice one, Barry!

I think the Physics prof liked using the various tools in the lab, right?  He advocated using the hook as a tool to twist wire into loops for making secure contacts, or something, if I remember.

Love live the hook!

I added a micro-driver and glass headed pin to mine. Plus a temporary lanyard. I haven't decide if I'm going to grind off the key ring attachment yet.

That's the guy Jack!  You know, I used to use an old safety wire tool of Dad's, and I'll bet that hook works almost as well.  I might try it next month :D

I checked it out just now. Nice review, details how it works so well for him. Dunno if he's a professor, just says he's a physicist.

Another chap there keeps an Explorer on his keyring. I tried it and found it surprisingly OK.

Looking good!

I'm always in two minds about lanyards. Love the look of them, don't like how they get in the way sometimes. So far I haven't had the courage to grind keyring nubs off, although I definitely prefer the feel of knives without them. I can't get past the "just in case" aspect of them, which SAKs represent for me.

Between this and that.

The Explorer Plus was a nice surprise for me.  I bought mine off fleabay as just an Explorer.  I was very pleasantly surprised when it arrived.  I had wanted this SAK after reading up on the different models and when I got it in hand I was not disappointed at all.  It quickly dominated pocket time.  The inline phillips is really what sets this SAK apart.  Heck any SAK with the inline phillips is a win.

My Explorer over the years has had to sit out from time to time in favor of my Swisschamp and a variety of other SAKs I was trying out.  It has never sat for very long or ever got placed into the SAK drawer.  There is just to much to like about the Explorer if you can do the layers.  Mine lives in my Skinth and my older one in my hike pack.  These are go to tools when I don't want to have to decide what to bring.  Having my Explorer with me is like having a trusted friend.  I know what it can and cannot do ( which is very little ).  The addition of the plus scales are nice and the mini driver just adds to the utility of this wonderful SAK.  I dream sometimes that VIC would make an 84mm version someday.  Until then the Explorer will always be one of my most favorite SAKs.

:iagree:.  The Swisschamp and Champion are both great SAKs.  I no longer have a Champion as I gifted both away to a member.  I find the Explorer the goldilocks of SAK sizes for pocket carry.  Yes my 84mm are more preferred these days due to wanting to slim down but I have no issues carrying my Explorer in pocket.  My skinth simplifies my carry.  I have a AAA light, bullet pen, PW2, and Explorer.
