My Plus scale Explorer
(Image removed from quote.)

Maybe the name "Explorer" invites people to go all out on them? Like a subconscious nudge..

I don't know. I think the older glass magnifier model may need a name change to the Torturer, or perhaps the Masochist.

With a bit of luck, the next old style Explorer I have coming in will be in great condition. I envision it with green plus scales, which I have on order, and being dedicated to outdoor use in my backpack.

I did get in a new style Explorer yesterday, which I'll be equipping with yellow plus scales when they arrive. I've always wanted to carry a bright yellow SAK, so this is finally my chance.  :woohoo:

I really like the toolset on the Explorer.  I find myself using the magnifying glass more and more for the fine print on labels and other stuff.  The inline phillips is also heavily used and better than the phillips on the back or the can opener tip.

Although I do have to confess the Explorer has not been seeing a lot of carry since I managed to get my hands on a Yeoman.  The width difference just makes the Yeoman a nicer fit for pocket carry.

Not plus scales, but how is this Explorer for a yellow SAK?

The yellow Explorer looks awesome!!!!

I took the opportunity to pocket the best of my older Explorers today. It's a bit beat up, but still quite serviceable.

The primary reason I got myself an Explorer: old man eyes.  ;)

It's my kitchen SAK. Blades and scissors for opening packets; can and bottle openers and corkscrew for obvious; Phillips and flat SD for tightening loose handle on pots and pans; magnifier for reading fine printed recipes and lists of ingredients. I never use it for food prep as I have much better knives for the job - even much better SAKs.

Absolutely!!  It's a pocket friendly Swisschamp!
One without the "workshop" tools, basically.

For many years the Explorer has been one of my go-to SAKs.  I just recently added some brushed Ti plus scales from Swiss Bianco.

Finally. And old glass magnifier Explorer in sensational condition. Other than some scuffs on the scales, the knife appears to be completely unused. This is from my favorite generation of 91mm SAKs. Grey housing and glass lens. Riveted scissors and package hook. Thick tang main blade with crossbow stamp. Stronger corkscrew. Awl with sewing eye. Explorer perfection.

I agree with that Buzz!  The evolution of SAKdom could have stopped right there and I'd be happy!

The Explorer has been my favorite SAK model since I learned about it and got my first back in the 1990s.  I've owned several and they've been carried and used more than the others.  A think an Explorer Plus with a file, saw, and chisel added would be about "perfect" for me, or coming from the other direction, a Champion Plus with the fish scaler removed.

Yellow scales are becoming contagious!  Nice choice Max.

Knowing I am partly to blame for the spreading, I’m doing my part. I think the Aquaflage and Gadsden make a good pair.
