Best Current Android Apps
on: February 10, 2013, 12:45:01 AM
I know we had a tread or two like this before, but that was ages ago. And there are many new apps available. So what apps are you using on your phones? Which ones would you recommend.

Here are my most used ones (in alphabetic order):

2x Client - Remote desktop
3G Watchdog - Monitors traffic - I have a 250mb monthly plan and it gets really expensive if I go over
Alarm Clock Xtreme - You have to solve a mathematical problem to turn it off. Very useful. :tu: ;)
Brightness level control - to adjust screen brightness - better than stock
Chrome - browser
Compass - just cause
Documents To Go - Office documents viewer
eBay - get updates if you get outbid of a message
eBuddy - IM app
ES File Explorer - Phone/LAN/Dropbox/... all in one
Fancy widget - Weather/clock/battery meter/calendar all in one
IMDB - for all the movie buffs
JustPictures - Pic viewer
Photobucket - access your account and links easily
QQPlayer - best video player - you can even watch flv with it.
RealCalc - Calculator/unit converter/...
Tapatalk - best forum app

As my system is stuck on 2.2 on my phone I also have:

ES Task Manager

really miss the task changer/kill on my nexus 7 when I'm on my phone.

On my phone I also have:

Copilot Live Premium (GPS/maps)
Gas Stations Spain (uses google maps to tell me the prices and locations of local gas stations)
JVC Smart Music Control (interfaces with my JVC car stereo via bluetooth)
Whatsapp (messaging program)

I haven't really added much on the Nexus 7 apart from:
Copilot, JVC smart music (as on phone)
Firefox mobile
Viera remote (for my TV)

should really look at more apps, but I'm pretty happy as is.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

2X for RDP

...

Have you figured out how to use it externally. I can log in from my LAN no problem, but if I want to connect via 3G I get an error message. I'm using a dyndns service to redirect my IP which worked before, I have a separate port set up. I just can't log in.

Anyone got anything new and exciting to add to this list?

I have stripped most of the extraneous software from both my phone and tablet.  I use FB reader for all of my ereader needs and it works very well.

Other than some basic utilities like Adobe Reader, Flash etc I really don't have much "fun stuff" installed.  I have a few specific service things like Facebook, Twitter, Callfilter, Camcard, Dropbox, Google Drive, eBay, Netflix and so on.

I like MyTracks for keeping track of things that I do occasionally like four wheeling and kayaking.  It provides some cool map views of whatever you are doing, like this:

You can actually retrace the route on your phone.  It actually loads the Google Streetview images and "drives" you along your route.

The only game I have installed is Stupid Zombies, which is kind of fun.  It's sort of like Angry Birds, except you shoot zombies instead of firing birds at piggies.

I have a few newsreaders as well- Wired Mobile, EndGadget and Discovery are all interesting.  I also have a local newspaper app, but I doubt that would be of interest to anyone outside of Nova Scotia.  In truth it's barely interesting to people inside NS... :P

FWIW, I use the free version of Remote RDP and it just works. Very simple, everything happens as you expect it to. It even works well enough that when I've been woken up in the middle of the night by an alarm call from out generator stopping I can log in and restart it before I've woken up enough to realise that I should have turned WiFi on because I don't get any phone reception in my house. Whether that's because it actually manages to work at a tolerable speed over a crap connection or whether it's actually intolerable but I tend to fall asleep whilst it's thinking, I don't know!

:jedi:

 :D

I had that one on my phone before I got my tablet.  I may load it on the Nexus as I think there are a couple of updates since then.  I had beaten every level to that point so I never bothered installing it on my tablet.

I use Nexus phones and tablets, so I am obviously a big fan of the Google apps offerings.

Besides those, however, I love:

DigiCal
SafeWallet
PhoneWeaver
Tapatalk
Camscanner
Falcon Pro
GPS Status
Pocket
BeyondPod and Pocket Casts
Root Explorer
PowerAmp
Press
TuneIn Radio Pro
Speed Test
Voice Choice
WeatherBug Elite,

to name just a few critical ones for me.

I did get that solitaire last week.... great selection :tu:

I am also a big fan of Feedly, even before the Google reader was cancelled. Finding it very useful for most of my onine reading. Also giving Evernote another go even though I couldn't find a point for it on my iphone a couple of years ago!

I am looking for a good GPS app that will track to with in a few feet. Is this possible. I had one app but it would only show the general area.

I believe that has to do with the GPS receiver not the app... but I could be wrong.

I don't know of any that are that precise.  Have you tried a geocaching app?
