Don't be duped: Otterbox cases are NOT waterproof
on: June 06, 2015, 01:46:52 PM
My wife got splashed pretty good yesterday.  When she pulled out her Otterbox Defender covered iphone 6, it was clear the phone was having "water problems".

Going to Otterbox's website, NONE of their Otterbox offerings are listed as waterproof anymore.  None.  The old Perserver isn't even listed.  Apparently they bought Lifeproof and so it appears they've kept the old names without the old level of protection.  I'm not happy.  Also, I now need to find a new case for my Galaxy S5

Life Proof sucks.  I spent $80 on a Life Proof case a few months ago and the corner is busted out of it and the bezel cracked.  I am really not happy with it.

The S5 is waterproof so the fact that the Otterbox Defender isn't waterproof is fine with me.  Yes it was annoying when I tried to use it in the rain and water had seeped in between the screen and screensaver, but that is better than stabbing myself in the ear with jagged plastic whenever someone calls me.

Stick with the Otterbox and get Mrs. Whippy an S5.

Otter box is over rated, over hyped, and over priced.

I spend a lot of time in both canoes and kayaks in warm weather, and being retired have a lot of time to go fishing in the canoe now. I put my phone in a zip lock bag, then in a Rubber maid pastil sandwich box. The rubber maid has a great seal, and your phone will stay dry.

Or use two zip locks. One for the phone, and then wrap the excess bag around the phone after sealing, then put it in another zip lock bag in your pack. Phone will stay dry.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

The quality of the Otterbox cases has also gone downhill quite a bit too.

The fit and finish on them is no where near what it used to be.

Take a look at Seidio cases. I bought their Obex case and holster for my iPhone 6 months ago and it is submersible. Nothing else was even available at that time for the 6.
I EDC'd a SAK before MacGyver did...

Daggone it .  Can a flipping manufacturers UP their game and not cut every corner to save/make a buck?  I bought my daughter a Lifeproof ( turned out to be a fake ) so she never used it.  We did test it and it worked flawlessly however.

I have an otterbox on my phone, tho mostly for drops and splashes not for swims.  I have a double zipper "waterproof" pouch for times when I think I'll need that level of protection.  Shame tho Otterbox, real shame.

Yeah not necessary, I've taken my S5 into shower several times and never had any water problem. The screen doesn't really work while wet though.

But correct me if I'm wrong, a phone case by its nature cannot be waterproof, no? Charging port and headphone jack you can have plugs, but all speakers and microphone and cameras cannot be shielded completely, plus the home button you can't cover up without losing the fingerprint reader.

My Galaxy S5 has been under 1 foot of water, with no issue
If I can help, let me know

Mine too.   The S5 is definitely waterproof by itself and I use the case more to protect it from drops, bumps etc.

Frankly I didn't know any of them were ever waterproof(Yes, stupid of me given the name OTTERbox), but I wasn't expecting them to keep water out for me at all. The Defender series let me down, cracking apart in multiple places on my old phone. But I have the Commuter Series on my HTC M8 and its taken numerous hard falls to no ill effect. So they do work for impacts quite well
