I just broke out this beauty today, to take some pictures for the 2023 Champ Challenge. I believe this is a first generation SwissChamp. I’m not an expert, but it has all of the hallmarks that I know of.

It would be perfect if Reginald Seymour Dillydally hadn’t had his initials put on the rear scale. Actually, I can’t complain. Reginald was kind enough to place this knife and pouch in his bedside drawer, and never use them for almost 40 years. I don’t know if that’s his real name. It could very well be Rudolph Sherlock Droopydrawers.

That is an old one Buzz.  I think a lot of Swisschamps spend their time in glove boxes and drawers.

I love the older scales and corkscrew.  They just seem to be more solid.

It’s only when you look closely at these early SwissChamps, that you notice how very many tweaks and changes they’ve made to this model. A very subtle evolution.

I have a brand new one and one a few years newer than yours, which was easy to date because of the hook, etc as a '92.  I agree with you that if you look closely there's a bunch of little changes between the two.  If someone that knew this stuff looked at my older one I bet there's a lot more.  I've been wanting to pick up a first gen for awhile now.  Nice find Buzz!

I think I might have 4 or 5 different generations of SwissChamps. This one has no hook, no hole for the pin in the plus scales, nickel-silver lanyard ring on the corkscrew side, skinny pliers, older style tweezers and toothpick, scissors with flathead screw and no spring channel, two sets of full height liners between the tools, grooved corkscrew, round eyeglass screwdriver with no molded logo.

I’d really like to replace the scales, but I want to track down the original plus scales appropriate to this model, which may be impossible.

My old SC was quite beat up. Bent tip on the small blade, damaged edge on the scissors, bad corrosion on the liners from a dunk in the sea

My Alibaba 2.2mm brass rod eventually arrived, so I decided to rebuild the SC, and replace the damaged small blade and scissors, and also swap out the file for the newer version that''s more effective.

You can see the components are in bad shape....

I used some OO steel wool to strip all the corrosion off the liners, and it also polishes at the same time. I then assembled all the liners together as a sandwich with a couple 2.5mm bolts and ran the stack over sandpaper until I got all the edge pitting removed. Polished up the liner edges, back springs and tool pivots with a Dremel and small polishing wheel.

Here''s the SC with all the layers rebuilt, ready for peening.

All done...I always worry about cutting the pins the right length. Too short and you cannot get the peen to fill the rivet nicely, or too long and the peened head ends up too large.

Some new Plus scales and ready for service!

I do like the smooth back you get with the old design without the hook. And the grooved CS. Also note the early round micro-screwdriver and the key ring in the original side location.

Just a side note...don't try the Vctorinox marketing picture tool layout like I did above, as it puts extra strain on the back springs as you're loading up multiple tools. I've done it before with newer SAKs, but it weakened the opener layer back spring on this SC. I've still got snap, but the tension is definitely a little less that it should be. Not enough to warrant a rebuild (again), but lesson learnt - don't partially open multiple tools on one layer, especially layers with back tools...

I counted about 60 changes from the original.

They can be fixed, but one of those 50//50 things. Some collectors are not too bothered with the lighter not working, as it's a known problem. I'm sure you'll get offers  :tu:

Well, I guess I have to get Hofritz out of his (her) storage space too. Grooved CS, grey mag glass, round mini driver, gold wore off hot stamp but still readable.  :salute:
