That's a really cool mod, but how are those pliers going to fit on my mod now?

I'm thinking a bail type attachment with a slight notch in the pliers handle would work nicely to keep them closed up. Nice work on that, definitely a unique mod for sure.

That was what I was trying to describe. ;)

Sometimes pics are worth 24 words :D

I was actually thinking of a 74mm SAK by Peter that had a similar bail attached to the rivet. :D But that picture works too. ;)

Ok so tonight was prototype night and I came up with something pretty wacky, but with a purpose in mind... :D

So you see that I am bascially making a 58mm version of the wenger pocketgrip! :D  Still a prototype and I need to make a clasp to hold the pliers closed but I see no reason why it cant work.  I wanted to carry a swiss keychain tool for ages to replace my leatherman P4, but I needed pliers!  So this idea was born.

(Image removed from quote.)

Its funny, I remember thinking it would be really hard to add pliers to an 84.. but doable...  I never thought adding them to a 58 was even close to realistic, but then I remembered that doing them fixed mode was an option and I'm very pleased with the concept so far.  :D
I really do try and avoid the word "awesome" as much as I can as I feel it's over-used.  However......

.......that's AWESOME!  :ahhh

Today was Ti day at the Syph shop.  Working on a cadet and also a 58mm.

Here are some pics of the cut out 58mm scales.  Top side has 1/16 holes with 3/32 countersunk to recess the torx T5 socket heads.  Back scale is drilled and tapped for 0-80 thread.

Nothing has been done to the scales yet except shape profiling.  Next I have to round over the edges and burn though $20 of sand paper! :D  Oh and I need 2 liners too, this if for a mini champ conversion.

It was serendipitous when I realized the OD of 0-80 thread was 1/16 inch, the pivot size for 58mm tools.  I would not have tools pivot on threaded pivots normally, but on these tiny guys it really isnt an issue.  I did tests and they work just perfect.

It's REALLY nice to mod a tool and not have to drill and sand out all the bloody tools... I get to leave all the tools and springs 100% stock and just focus on the Ti frame fabrication!

Tapping those small threads in Ti must have been an adventure.

I did some 1-72 threads in stainless a few years ago and I'm sure I was on the verge of breaking the tap constantly.

YES!  But I at least has the foresight enough to drill and tap before I cut them out of the stock sheet.

If I messed up a hole after spending all the effort to cut the scale out first I would have been double mad.  I only have 1 tap as well, but I used an excessive amount of oil and I had no problems.  Also for tapping, I use a cordless drill with the clutch set to very low value, so it wont force the tap if it's binding and cause it to break.  Still it's nerve wracking.  Tapping with a hand T handle is disaster for me, Ive never been able to use those well.

NO!!! MUST NOT SPEND MORE MONEY ON 58s!!!!

Ya making the scales is the bulk of the work, so probably more than you want to spend.  I kept track of supplies while making this and I blew $30 on sand paper and sanding belts alone.  Ti is very aggressive on abrasives and takes a lot of work to get just right.  For a comparison, I probably used about $4 of sandpaper to shape and finish the brass.

Im assembling the Ti minichamp right now, pics to follow in a few minutes.

Omg my wrist is killing from doing these.  Maybe I need to invest in a proper metal cutting band saw, that would make like easier I think. :D

I even took video of the mini champ, its uploading now.  More in a few minutes.

That's just flat out purty. I have to ask though, how did you manage to get the screw ends flush with the scales?

I held the SAK fully assembled against a belt sander with 600 grit belt. :D Then took the back scale back off and finished the edges, polished and reassembled.

Holding a tiny object like that, that I spent so many hours on, against a belt sander, did feel a littler nerve wracking!

What screws are appropriate for the 58mm saks?  Are they commonly available?  I would love to have a alox rambler, but +B price is a bit high.  If it is an easy swap, I might give it a go myself.

Cheers

I used 0-80 threaded screws.  They are common at hobby stores, but only the knife supply places had them with torx heads.  The outer diameter of the screws happens to be exactly the hole size of the Vic parts for 58s.  These little tools pivot perfectly fine on threaded rod.
