Pawnshop Find
on: February 23, 2013, 11:24:46 PM
Rescued this Flair from a junk bin in a pawn shop this morning. The tip of the blade is chipped and the wire cutters are a little messed up but overall not in bad shape. Not sure if I'll hang on to this one or not, anybody got an idea of the value? I think I got a deal on it, cost me three dollars.

The Flair cleaned up real nice! It's a shame about the chipped blade though. I guess the search for an original style leather sheath begins. That may be a tricky one... hmmm

The blade and pliers are regular PST, right? I bet LM could replace them, I doubt they'd replace a Flair with a newer tool considering the rarity, and you could always mark it as sentimental or whatever.

The warranty still is valid on this, you could send it in and Leatherman would replace the blade and maybe the pliers head too.

I will look into the warrantee for sure. Thanks all for the suggestions. I know the Leatherman warrantee is second to none, they took good care of me when I busted the pliers in half on my Skeletool.

Great find. I'm jealous of all these pawn shop finds. My best luck was an original Supertool for $60 and a PST for $50.

My first original Leatherman Super Tool was $89, with a discount. Great tool, very expensive. No internet back in them days either, unless you worked for the Government. (Green screens)

I bought my original super tool from a returned war veteran (I'm not sure what conflict... desert storm or Kosovo) anyways he sold it to me for $15 with every tool snapped off in the handles. I lived near Portland at the time so I drove to the Leatherman HQ walked in the front door and was greeted by a gorgeous secretary, she patiently and politely listened to me as tried to explain what I was doing there holding this mangled supertool. I explained that the broken tool was in no way a manufacturer fault this was clearly abuse on the owners part. I asked if they would sell me new tools to install myself or I would pay them to repair it. I handed the busted tool over to the model/secretary,  she smiled and chucked it in a bin and handed me a brand new one with a new sheath! I was stunned.

I'm not certain the warranty was meant to refurbish something so you could get maximum price on resale.  That does seem a bit like taking advantage of their excellent service.

Just a thought....

This is what I sent Leatherman...

Hello,

I have recently rescued a Flair from a junk bin in a pawnshop that has a damaged blade and was curious to know if you offer any service to get the blade replaced. I know about the excellent warranty service you offer and have used it in the past when my Skeletool pliers broke. What I don't know is how the blade was damaged on the Flair and I'm not sure if it is covered under the warranty. Please let me know what route I can take to get my Flair repaired.

Sincerely,
Pat
