Is that the one with the locking awl? I think someone from our UK crowd has one of those. Interesting concept.

I'm fairly sure that one has been discussed before.  IIRC it has a liner lock on the awl so falls short of the UK's 'reason free' EDC.

Has anyone handeled this knife?
In the picture it looks like the pins are sticking out a bit more than whats comfortable. But it might just be the picture.

Just been to collect one of these from the delivery office. Horrendous! Massive side to side play on everything. It might salvage with some secondary peening, but out of the box pretty much the worst thing I've ever had from True Utility. If it doesn't smarten up after a few caresses with a tapping bat, it'll go in my mod fodder box for playing with another day (probably for nicking the utility blade holder from)

That does seem to be par for the course with True Utility doesn't it? :-\  Some very nice ideas, but the execution often lets them down.

That was my biggest fear! OK, I might have just got a duff one, but I'd hate to think young people are using this item if this is the standard they are all built to. I've decided against giving this one a few slaps with a hammer, and returning it back to where it was bought instead. I'll also be letting them know my thoughts and concerns about this item being in the hands of young people, and I'll not be pulling any punches in my comments I think. As it stands the one I have is bad enough to be dangerous in my opinion

Update: I sent an email to the official shop for the Scouting organisation and gave them my opinion on this "knife" in no uncertain terms. I told them I believed this is a dangerous item (and why) and if they are all of this build quality the product should not just be discontinued but recalled before kids end up getting hurt.

I have just had a reply thanking me for briniging it to their attention, telling me they are sending me out a free returns post label to return the item, AND that they are reviewing the item and they will get to me with their findings

Hopefully its just your tool. You would think that a organisation that teaches kids to use knives and tools would properly review items like this before putting them into production.  :(

Well, no doubt the sample they were originally showed before contracts were exchanged was fine, but you can't expect the Scout Organisation to be responsible for ongoing QC, hence the reason for me flagging it. It's now on their radar and hopefully they'll make the right decision - though as you mentioned mine might have been a rogue example.

Just in case they send me a refund instead of a replacement tool (which would be a bad sign in itself, as I've told them I'll accept a replacement if the build quality is up to par), I'm going to see if I can get a video camera rigged up to capture just how bad this tool really is. Not sure how tht will work out as last time I tried to use the camera it produced the clip on a bizarre file type that my computer wouldn't recognise  :-\ Photos wont capture the problems well enough, so hopefully I'll overcome the file issue .... somehow

EDIT: I just checked the World Scouts Shops website, and the knife is not currently listed  :tu: Seems they are indeed taking this seriously and doing a proper review  :hatsoff:

As well as the safety consideration it could have put a few off them.

I got a SAK for a trip when I was 14. It was absolutely useless and I couldn't do anything with it and was lost somewhere. I spent a good ten years thinking all SAKs were worthless. It was many years before I came to realise I had a knock off.

Scouting is huge in my family (both grandfathers/father/brother/me/both nephews in BSA, mother/sister/both nieces in GSA---mmmm thin mints).

These newer BSA knives have gotten more and more expensive with no gain in quality (and some have been shoddy indeed).  Most new scouts in my family have wanted one of their own so when at the uniform stores I check them out.  I've seen a tremendous variance in fit/finish on the same model.  Ask to see two of the same model and you may see what I've seen.

50ft-trad is dead on when he states how this happens by samples being awesome and real production models being poorly executed.  BSA has been taken advantage of quite often by this and it bothers me because BSA-labelled knives should always be solidly built, lifetime purchases.

That BSA stamp on their knife earns those manufacturers quite a bit of money, and they crap on the BSA to save a few bucks by cutting corners.

Nice call 50ft-trad, getting BSA involved was more than I've ever done (which was simply filtering through them at the store until I had one that was up to snuff).
Pirates, historically speaking, were some of the finest and most dedicated Multitool guys ever.  They commonly cut their limbs off just to take advantage of Multitool capabilities: e.g. Captain Hook, Long John Silver, Pegleg Pete, the list goes on and on...
