Bought a 12"x1.25" Damascus billet/  Thickness is 4mm  (I'll mix metric and imperial units any time I like thank you).  $44 incl postage.  no, it's not stainless. But there should be enough there to make 6 large SAK blades or perhaps 4 and a few sets of bolsters or some 74mm blades. I'll see what takes my fancy once it arrives.

Very cool.  That should be fun.  I can't wait to see what you produce.

BTW:  I wish the US would switch to the metric system.

Ooo, that would make for a sexy small Climber blade. :D

Congratulations sir! Wished had access to a shop (more and more) every time I see neat projects like this being done by those with the skill & talent. How are you planning on cutting and shaping it? :pok: Would be curious to see your progression on this, please.

I have had this seller saved for at least six months and never got around to buying a billet.

Not sure how long it will take to get here, it's coming from India.

Got some more wood today too.
I can see the figure in this grain being a nice match for the damascus.

How do you plan to make SAK blade with the 4mm thick stock?

I'll cut a rectangle blank big enough to get a SAK blade on and then grind it down to the required thickness, material removal is easy,  the trick part is putting it back if you take off too much.

In an ideal world using a surface grinder,  but bench sander will have to do.

Peter, you are on a freakishly similar mod path as me! :D

I was just ordering some Damasteel from the Canadian importer for the Swedish made damasteel.  Its a dual martensitic stainless RWL34 & PMC27.

Have you thought of using the Damascus as a scale material? I know, :twak: for me even thinking about it, but I think it would be a really 8) scale material.

Certainly could, but then you could get the non-blade type which is cheaper.  Its a mix of steel that can be heat treated, and one that cant.  Used for cutlery and that type of thing.  It would be very heavy though as the downside.

I would like to do hard anodized alox scaled pioneer, with all 4 tools being Damasteel.  The awl would be tricky part though so I would probably make it more 2D shaped than the rolled over part.

Not for scales as such, but definitely for Bolsters.

Imagine this kind of thing but on a SAK in the wood and steel pictured above....

Robert, "Great minds..."  and all that.

I'm doing my usual trick of going down the low cost prototyping path first.

This billet is costing me $44.  Looking at the price list for the Damasteel, the same size piece would cost me nearly $200 more.

I'll have a play around with this and figure out what I want to do and then possibly order some of the "good stuff".

At least with the Made in India material it's only a $7 blade if I stuff it up, not $40.

Thats true.  If I get the 1 1/4 inch wide stuff though I can fit two blades on that thickness of material, so every 3.5 inches gives me 2 blades.  I work it out to about $35 per SAK blade.. then plus whatever atmospheric controlled heat treat will cost me. I found a place that does it though.

Im going to keep them at 1/8 thick blades and just use slightly wider springs.  Stock ones are 0.105 and so and extra 0.020 is no big deal.

Ran across this metric to US measurement conversion page, and copied it to the desktop for a quick reference.

This way I can view it offline too, since am on a wireless network. So miss wired connection, but not at $60/month.

For Damascus scales a pricier option I forgot about is titanium damascus (timascus).  That way you get a pattern but light weight also.

okay... so this lump of steel arrives in the mail and so I thought I better get a practice blade under way.

What I'm planning to do is use one of the leftover Wenger Scissor backsprings from my junkbox and make up some Al or Ti scales to build something along the lines of a Vic' Solo with a custom Damascus blade. I have no idea at the moment exactly how it will turn out other than that vague description.

First order of business is to cut out a blank to work from so I sawed a "blade-length" off the end of the bar.
Because this billet is 4mm thick I need to reduce it down to 2.5mm for this first project.
This was done using a combination of belt sander, files and elbow grease.

Being a first attempt, this piece was cut from the less interesting end of the billet, but the pattern should develop a bit more once the blade is profiled.

more pic's to follow

Cool!  Im still working out the best way to grind blades. I think Im going to mechanical route instead of eying it. Make some sort of guide block or something.   I really need a band saw for roughing out shapes, cutting by hand is killing my wrists.

Yeah, it's a little beyond my poor wee bandsaw, unless I wasn't worried about wearing out a $28 blade for each SAK blade I cut out. But I did get some stainless cutting blades for my jigsaw and will hold that in the vice and make up a "table" to go on that with the blade poking up through. (Sounds nice and dangerous :ahhh )

I cut this one out by hand and it still has a bit of final shaping to do but dinner is ready so it can wait until tomorrow.

Don't know what I'm going to use to etch it yet either, the nanny state says you can't get ferric chloride from the electronics shop any more so might have to use Hydrochloric acid which you can buy in 4L containers from the hardware or Pool supplies shop.

The pattern emerging on this looks like it would go well with some wooden scales, the grain in some of that high figured Olive wood is just about a match for the Damascus pattern.

Ya I think you have the same saw I was thinking of buying, the riobi.  Then I learned that its really mean for wood, unless you can slow the blade down somehow.  The cheapest metal band saw I can find around here would be $400.  While Id love it, I dont know about blowing 400 on one.  I can buy 144 jewlers saw blades for $30.
