That homemade jigsaw table is just what I'm thinking of. One of the local 2nd hand shops has several jigsaws marked down to clear from $5. If I get one with variable speed I can slow the stroke rate down for cutting blade steel and not risk overheating the blade. Also I can use the carbide tipped blades for cutting Ti sheet without chipping teeth like it did when I tried before in my current saw. (It's a commercial quality saw that is about 40 years old, fantastic piece of gear but only has 2 speeds, stopped and flat out.)

I think that profiling the blade would be a prime task for a small mill. make up a fixture with two angled surfaces and inbuilt clamps then use a face mill to cut each side. Would need some finishing work on the belt but will cut out a couple of hours of hand work.
To get that blade from the billet to the state it is now took about 5 hours work... would make them rather expensive to sell.

anyway.. finished my coffee, so back into it.

Im starting to think about a DIY cutting method too.  But with my Ti cutting experience, I learned that without adequate lubrication/coolant the blades die pretty fast.  Now add in an aquarium pump and coolant for the blade and I think that would be a winner for roughing steel and Ti.

Getting the layout sorted so I can figure out scales shape.

Also comparison to olive wood grain.

side liners fitted, now to work them to a nice shape and make bolsters and scales.
I'm now thinking something like the shape of an old Soldier... will probably have to play with the internal shape of the backspring and bend it in a little to get the taper from buttend to bolsters. great fun letting something like this evolve while almost being a spectator.

I've been thinking about that, this isn't really a mod, the only SAK part is a Wenger backspring and that has been pretty heavily modified.

It's a bit like building a "T Bucket" street rod where the only genuine Ford model T part is the radiator shell. It's really a "ground up" new build using one old part.

I will have to apply a bit of thought to some up with a name.

I cut a groove with a dremel cutoff wheel and then slowly pulled it up and sideways.
Turned out much better than I have any right to expect. A case of "more ass than class".

I know a maker who use angle grinder to cut and shape the blade before fine tuning, consider the speed and cheapness of the disks, maybe try that for rough shaping.

GRRRR,  just when things are getting interesting I've blown a drive belt on my sander. Cheap Chinese POS.

I'll post this latest progress Pic and head down the road to try and get another.

Ended up going with Apricot for the wood, still nice figured grain but a little darker.

I think this thing is going to have to be just ornamental. I can't get this blade to harden, probably the dodgy Indian Damascus. They claim it is 1095 and 15N20 but I've tried 3 times to harden it with no success.
I've tried bright red with oil quench, orange with oil quench and even orange with a brine quench which should have made it brittle as hell but it's still soft enough to bend
Looks like I have a bar of material for making bolsters...

Well, at least the knife looks pretty, and I guess i can use it for spreading butter or something.

I'm a bit peeved actually, I was going to make this folder my 1000 post giveaway.  >:(

That is nice work! I guess my first selfmade knife would look like a lump of steel ran over by a train...
And even though no user, highly ornamental it is.

If you still have the seller's contact info sent them an email about it. Not sure how much you paid for it, but if it isn't what it was supposed to be you could seek recourse if they won't make it right. That's a lot of work go go through and end up with a pretty lemon.

  Is a handsome looking knife.

Have you tried baking it between 450° F to 650° F? or torch hardening? Heard that may help for stubborn unknown steel. Just offering a suggestion, am no way knowledgeable about hardening steel.

Smurf, that's too bad about the heat treat but you for sure made a nice blade profile.  I hope my first try turns out as nice.

After much use of my google-fu I deduced that soak time, or lack of it, was my problem not temperature.

So I made up a little mini kiln with some bricks and a camp stove to help me keep the blade above critical temperature for 5 minutes. I used a brine quench again and then a light temper and now the blade is nice and springy.
Also it etched with a much more distinct pattern to the Damascus, a sure sign that the hardness of the steel has changed. In the hardened state the 15N20 resists the etch much more than the 1095.

So, having managed to complete this little project with impeccable timing it can return to being my 1000 post giveaway. (this will be post 999...)

I have devised a cunning plan to select a lucky recipient and if you are interested in being in with a chance, get over to "The break Room" and try your luck.

Thanks,  yeah, it has fallen into a bit of a Barlow shape, but it's just what evolved. i didn't set out with any clear shape in mind.
I do think it has nice proportions.

So it has Australian Apricot wood? Thought was some of that olive wood you had bought. Turned out nice.

Glad you was able to forge it. Was reading up on the kiln method, or an acetylene torch. Seemed more used the kiln/baking method for the stubborn or unknown steels. Is good to see that you have the tenacity of a true craftsman.

Nice proportions and for sure comfy in use. Take a look at Scagel slipjoints for ideas, those are nice as well.
