I've not seen so much ox on Vic quality inox. Are you going to acid bathe it?

Looks beyond saving that one but I guess with some effort it could be made presentable again? It'll be interesting to see, that's for sure!

Apparently it lived in the bottom of a toolbox full of rusty tools for several years.

This is the listing
http://www.ebay.com/itm/251230422119

It's on its way to me, but looking at the other photos it is surprising how little corrosion appears on the liners.
Is the file in these made of carbon steel? Because it looks VERY rusty and I think much of what is on the other tools is actually staining rather than the tools rusting themselves.

But the one thing that I can't figure out is the state of the mag glass frame. The plastic looks "decomposed" like some plastics go if they are left out in the sun. Or perhaps it is from some solvent? I may have an excuse to make a metal frame sooner than I thought.

Seriously, if you will send to Vic it is very likely you will get a new replacement instead. Or you could even get that one repaired with all new parts if you want to keep the old style magnifier, just ask. No need to explain how it ended up like this. My 2c.

Or I could say that I have slightly acidic sweat and this damage is all from pocket carry in a hot climate.

Actually, you've all got me wondering if I should just send it back. That would be cool if they sent me a Champion plus.

That may be the way to go, especially if you either want a new one for personal use, or if you could use it for mod fodder :)  Of course, if you were looking forward to the challenge, then by all means, give it a go.  I would be interested to see the results :tu:

Any idea what this was originally? Don't think I've seen one of the old 'dog-leg' Wengers with aluminum handles before.

Great restoration, by the way!  :tu:

Thanks for the info. So those alox scales were hand-made. Nice to know I haven't been missing out on some rare and exotic specimen.

Aluminum doesn't rust. But those aluminum liners, being in contact with steel, can corrode when immersed in an electrolyte (like sea water or salt air).

Aluminum doesn't rust. But those aluminum liners, being in contact with steel, can corrode when immersed in an electrolyte (like sea water or salt air).

As an Aircraft engineer I'm pretty familiar with corrosion in its many forms, my point was that in most old neglected SAKs (and I've pulled apart dozens of them) it is usually the Aliminium liners that corrode producing that white gritty powder (aluminium oxide) that binds up the pivots and the liners take on that pitted dark appearance, while the tools can look as shiny as the day they left Ibach.
With Stainless Steel, Aluminium and Brass all in contact all you need is a little salt from pocket or hand sweat and a little moisture and you have a better than average environment for dissimilar metal corrosion and it will be the Aluminium that takes the hit first. I have seen knives where the liners literally fell apart as I stripped the knife.

I still think that most of the mess on this knife is from other tools in the bottom of that toolbox. That main blade has almost a camouflage pattern on it but the surface does not appear pitted at all. The file does look as if it has rusted, quite badly in fact, which was why I was asking if they were made of a different metal.

Well, it should be here by the weekend and I can have a look at it first hand.

Another thing I noticed, this doesn't appear to have the fish scaler (no great loss) and any champion I've seen does have it.

It's amazing what you can achieve with a stitched cloth wheel on a bench grinder and white polishing compound

Well wasn't the switch to stainless files a somewhat newer implementation? I have a faint memory of them switching to stainless files at least.. But I could be wrong but if not that could simply be the older model file showing it's lack of rust resistance.. :P

Quote from SAKwiki

"In 2005 (date needs confirmation) Victorinox introduced a new Stainless Steel metal saw and file. This new tool can be very aggressive in removing material and should last a very long time it maintained."

so I guess it's pre 2005...
