A few years ago I gave my father a alox Pioneer for his birthday. I saw it again the other day, hanging on his keychain, all scratched up, having seen a lot of use  :)

Tradesman:  All the time.  My farrier carries an old SuperTool.

Good shout out Mr Whippy!
Im a farrier too and carried a SAK until 1999 when my wife bought me my first Leatherman! I found it so useful i bought one for my best friend who is also a farrier. Why? Well ive cut a horse free badly tangled in wire, pulled various items out of their soles, cut away bandages with it, fixed headcollers, mended fences etc. Plus it stood up to the abuse from being trod on by my own 16.2!

been away for a few days to the coast. on arriving at our 'holiday home' (static caravan/mobile home) we found a few problems , including a leaking toilet. the so called ''maintenance man'' that was sent to solve the problemS had a Gerber sheath on his belt. so I enquired about his 'multitool'. he looked at me strangely but eventually the penny dropped in his tiny one celled brain and he proudly whipped out a ...... suspension  :sa:
"had it for years" he said, "wouldn't be able to do my job without it ! great little tool !"
so I showed him a wave and spirit, I just happened to have on me  ::) and he didn't seem impressed one bit  :o
that said after 3 attempts and lots of BS he wasn't able to mend the loo (or any of the other things) so he wasn't that great at his job WITHthe tool ! I set about it with duck tape and it lasted well enough for our visit  :D

I'm actually not all that surprised that some guys are totally devoted to a single MT, if they have used it for years it's a reliable friend that deserves a little loyalty, even to being blind to the merits of other MTs.

I am however disappointed that a maintenance guy couldn't sort a leaky toilet. ::)

the really sad part Gareth is that I told him what the problem was with the loo, and the bit that needed replacing (possibly) would have meant spending about £1.50 and taken about five minutes !!!
(although that is usually what I think before a job takes me all day )

BUT it was nice to hear someone who rated a Gerber suspension which after all (IMO) isn't that bad a tool, and is a brilliant tool if it's the only tool to hand  :multi:

I was in Wallly world a few weeks back.  One of the associates was scraping the floor with what appeared to be a Gerber multitool that he then stored in a leather sheath on his belt.

Around here, I see a multitool about three times a month. It's normally a Gerber MP600, Leatherman Wave, or cheapie (China-made Schrade, Kobalt, Husky, Sheffield, etc.) in a sheath. I've only seen a multitool in use by a stranger twice; a Wave and a ST200.

The construction workers, police, military, and maintenance people around here typically carry a Gerber, SOG, or Leatherman.

I've seen more folding knives clipped to pockets than anything else. Normally, that's a China-made Kershaw or China-made Spyderco. Oh, and the folding box cutters.
This is gonna hurt...

Today at the store a contractor bought a new spray gun that was in a clamshell package.  He reached into his pocket and pulled out this old Wenger.  :tu:

the only people I ever see with a MT or SAK are people I introduced to these awesome concepts.
I am glad they have them, but it is sad that no one else does
If I can help, let me know

I never ever see people carrying multis or saks and i know many people who rides motorcycles or do manual work so they are a multi public. Now the other day a friend with his girlfriend came to dinner and she saw my swisstool when opening a bottle, she said "hey thats great" and pulled her multi out of her backpack, it was a chinese plier small multi, pretty cool actually and i was like wtf (she is a graphic designer)  :D so you never know who will be carrying a multi around.

Except from one or two technicians at work I know who have them, I see one on a guy's belt maybe once every week or two. More often at places like Home Depot or Sears than at supermarkets and such.

I've said this before (probably in this thread) but:

The urbanization of modern society has led to fewer people actually being "Multitool" capable.  More people have to call somebody to fix anything/everything and modern engineering practices make most modern appliances (including cars, btw) extremely inhospitable to the DIY'ers.

With this shift, the value of possessing basic tools (and the perceived need to have them) is markedly reduced.  In more rural settings, where professional repair services are in shorter supply, is where you'll find individuals carrying tools of various types with them.

Awesome!

My farrier is also a good friend.  He and my wife conspired to buy me a forge for Father's Day.  I haven't had a chance to play with it much (been doing a massive home renovation), but very soon! :D

My hubby and I were visiting his mother, in a care facility.

The respiratory therapist and i were looking at a piece of equipment, an automated feeding device, that's on a stand. It was loose, and had a flathead screw that needed to be tightened. I used my Climber to tighten it. She said, 'I usually have my multitool on me.'
