Which version of S557 is your favorite?
on: March 02, 2013, 01:18:31 PM
Which version of the Wenger S557 would you recommend to someone wanting one?

Some people go for scale tools, other a fancier grip, perhaps more aesthetics of wood scales. Which one grabs/grabbed your fancy?  Or would you recommend some other choice, against getting one, or some other secretive insight that some of us might not be aware of?

Myself, every time I look at one - just want to reach out and grab it! Think I want the Universal Wrench & the slip-joint pliers - not sure why - it just grabs me.   :D   Was planning on getting one later on down the road, yet recent news of Victorinox taking them over worries me. Should we wait to see what Victorinox will do? Or would I kick myself in the butt later down the road 'cause of hesitation??

What is your take on the subject?  :D

Evolution S557 - Avg. $57

EvoGrip S557 - Avg. $62

EvoWood S557 - Avg. $100

  Price Differences:
EvoGrip is $10 more than the Evolution. EvoWood walnut scales are $60 more than EvoGrip. Ooph!
Amazon lists the Evolution around $57, EvoGrip at $62, & EvoWood at $100. Think Campmor has the Evolution at $50.

  Weight:
Evolution 4.5 ounces, EvoGrip 4.5 ounces, & EvoWood 4.4 ounces.

  Scale Tools:
Evolution & EvoGrip have Tweezers & Toothpick. EvoWood has none.

I hate the evogrip style.  Its glued on rubber material and mine started flaking off in a month.  Wont buy another of that type ever again.

I only have the standard Evolution S557 and love it.  I do have a couple Evogrip tools.  They are eye catching but I haven't really noticed a significant difference in grippiness.  The Evowood is beautiful, but I'm not sure (almost) twice the price beautiful.

I was asking myself the same question-Evogrip or Evolution scales?
And than I found an S557 Exclusivities version, with one side Evolution scales and other side Evogrip.
So, now I have "both".

I'll take plastic or metal scales because they are the lowest maintenance.

I wouldn't want to gamble with the evogrip, even though they are rather attractive.

EvoWood for me, absolutely. Here's mine:

Would have to say the the EvoWood is the more exotic OEM scale option. Not other company has that on their knives. So the walnut EvoWood makes these more unique.

Looked at EDC Source, didn't see any EvoWood Wengers over there.
One outfit on eBay is listed as Top Seller has an EvoWood S557 at $100 + free 1st Class postal.
Amazon at $98 - free shipping has been bad lately through them. Last two orders with free shipping have taken 2 to 3 weeks to process before shipping. Once shipped have arrived in 2 to 3 days.

I did get my first Wenger 85mm from Amazon the other day, an Evolution S557. It's much nicer than I expected. The lock lever (button?) looks a little catchy for getting it out of the pocket, but other than that, the F&F and the action of the tools seem excellent, and very snappy. Can't really vote as I only have that one...

Sure you can. Vote for which one you like the most, or would like, based on whatever criteria you use. I don't have brothers (though recently found 3 half-sisters after 30+ years), none of my friends in the real world understand or can converse multitools, and my family says, "What do you want with another one?'

Support, advice, heckling, poking fun at - all is good.  :tu:

OK, based on price and simplicity of design, the regular Evo scales are more appealing to me. The scales on mine are tight and flawless, but would like to get hold of an EvoWood model to compare.

Thanks and cheers!

Well .... I'm not an S557 owner, or "S" anything owner as the locking blade is a deal breaker for me. However, as regards scale comparisons I do have a number of other Wengers (my personal favourite being the Traveller) with a variety of different scales: Evolution, Evogrip, Classic, Soft Toch, Brushed Stainless, "Coffin" stainless (Metal 50), and "Coffin" scales with inlay (Deluxe Cigar Cutter).

For me the Evowood feels WAY better in the hand than the Evolution or Evogrip versions, but the Soft Touch feels very nice too ... although do I find myself more often carrying the Brushed Stainless and Coffin scaled ones more often. Based on that, I'd have to say the Evowood as I don't know of any other variations of the knife other than the Evo and Evogrip

Just pulled the trigger on a EvoGrip557.

Would love the EvoWood, but really can't justify the price.Thankfully they dont do a black beauty version!

Might re-scale it in the near future...

I like the EvoGrip scales myself.  While I don't have a 557 (yet), I do have a couple of other Wengers, one with the standard Evo scales, the other with the EvoGrip scales, and I personally find the "Grip" scales to actually be grippier...   :tu:  Haven't had a problem with the coating coming off them either.

I do have a question about that universal/multi wrench tool though... I'm skeptical of how well it will actually work.  Looks like there are different versions of it.  Seems like the ones that are very finely graduated won't be as sturdy.  How good of a purchase does it actually give on nuts and bolt heads?  Also, does it have metric, or standard increments on it?  Metric would be a much better fit for me.

I don't like the Evo scales. :( They looked cool in the pictures but when I tried one in a shop it just didn't feel right. Too much scales on the knife compared to the normal scales. Also the scissors were hard to pull out because of the Lock. My Traveler is just perfect for me. :D
