Wash and Lube Day
on: March 03, 2013, 04:33:04 AM
The wife was working so I was cleaning the kitchen, and I figured that it would be a good time for the SwissTools to have a run through the dishwasher. After washing they were placed on a specifically designed hot air dryer (ie. furnace vent)

Here they are all clean and oiled, tomorrow after the oil has soaked into all the pivots I'll wipe all the excess with some paper towel:

There is a black one missing though, I had taken it out of my work bag to use it at home for something, and the next day I received the one I got form the Captain and just dropped that one in my bag in its place. Can't remember where I put the other though  I'm sure it will come to me in the middle of the night...

Running my MT's and knives through the dishwasher is something I've been meaning to do for a while now.  Do you open all the tools up when you do it?

Mhm doesn't the strong dishwasher detergent damage the tools (blades)?

Open some, keep some closed, basically in whatever way that will allow the pressurized water to contact as much surface as possible.

Yes, to a point. On Vic polished tools it dulls the surface ever so slightly, a sort of a chemical brushing. I find that it adds to the "grippiness" of the SwissTool, increasing its performance.

On tools that come with a brushed finish originally, any change is unnoticeable.

This has a lot to do with the hard water here which has a very high iron and calcium content. With soft water and today's phosphate free detergents, I doubt that it would have any effect at all.

It looks like 43 would do it, but with the going price of a well used SwissTool equaling the list price of a new Core, I wouldn't hold your breath... :D

I am pretty sure that a dishwasher will also warp the cellidor scales.

Don't worry mate, I reckon you've got enough there to write Vic anyway.  :D I think I spy a Spirit in there (unless one shrank in the wash  :P ) How are you finding that one?

It's a cheeky little thing, has more give in the hand than a full ST, but comes in extremely handy. I must say though, if it only had a pocket clip it would be close to EDC Nirvana.

Word of warning: I've taken to using the ST chisel to smooth out the surface of my fingernails, and for cuticle maintenance, but one day I picked up the Spirit and was using it until I found that if you forget about the "coffin corner" of the chisel, it will slice a good half inch gash into skin before you feel it. You do end up feeling it for the next week or so...

The 7th one had a slightly firm opening plain blade, so I had lubed it from both ends, hoping it would seep in better from this direction. Seems to be a slight variance of rivet tension from tool to tool.

As to how many, I've never used more than two at once, but I've found that one needs at least the following:
  • A Standard model
  • A backup to the Standard during warranty service (four to six week turnaround time here in the States)
  • An X
  • An RS
  • A 2002
  • A 1998
  • A BO model
  • A backup BO
  • A 1998 BO
  • A MultiMatt Australian Army BO :D
  • And a Spirit X

The other is just just cheap Standard that I happened across. There is also an unpictured AutoTool, that is my no means waterproof.
(you have to wonder why they put an ice scraper on a tool full of electronics...)
