Alox Cadet
on: March 03, 2013, 10:45:38 AM
I recently scored a blue Alox Cadet, one of the ones without the keyring that comes with a leather sheath. I'm overjoyed with it and its a great addition to my legal EDC.
As always I have questions  :D  I was very surprised to see Vic had used a washer as a spacer on the blade. I've never come across this before but then I'm mostly used to farmers and Soldiers. Do all Cadets have this washer or is it just the recent keyringless models ?

The one I just bought has a keyring as well as a washer.

One of the black ones with a red shield so I guess it's common.

I do wish mine didn't have a keyring. It's too sharp and digs into my palm. :-\

I just don't know enough about Cadets to know if they always had the washer, must be due to the blade thickness.
The lack of keyring was the deciding factor in getting this Cadet and the pocket sheath was an added bonus.

Yeah.. I might have to pick one up without a keyring later on if this one bugs me too much. I think I can live with it though and at least this one's a looker.. :D

Precisely, the earlier blade thickness should be 2.4 mm and new one (swiss made) have a 2.0 mm... 0.4 mm is the thickness of the washers 8)

Thanks  :tu:  When you say the blade should be 2.4mm and the new one is 2.0 mm do you mean they used to use 2.4 mm blades on older cadets ?

All current 84 mm alox use the main blade with the thinner tang and the ugly (but functional) washer. It's one of the measures to lower the cost of production, similar to what happened to the main blades on the 91 mm series I believe at about the same time. The 91 mm have an indent into the liner that acts as a spacer, instead of the washer used on the 84 mm.

This is one of the main reasons why the old Cadets have such an appeal. And is not the only one.

The thinner main blade on 84 mm is not post 2001: I have a nylon (Economy) Recruit that's 20 years old and that one has the same thinner tang.

These like you got are very nice Cadets and the pouch suits them very well. I have one in red, below. Here it is, with another in the old config (I don't have that many Cadets, I am not collecting them).

The Cadet is an awesome knife. Especially when upgraded with scissors or accompanied by a keychain Rambler.

 :tu:

I have some of those little black beauties ordered myself.

Speaking of Cadets in general, my personal favorites are Cadet II and the "Micro-Farmer" (Cadet II with saw). The old ribbed one in my previous post here is a Cadet II (small spear point blade in lieu of the nail file).

Personally I wish Vic would have released this black Danish beauty in Cadet II config and/or without the ring. Just me.

My current EDC, Micro-Farmer in beautiful HAIII (polished liners and easy replaceable parts) customized by Robert aka Syph:

Yeah, it's due to the thinner tang they started using.  AKAIK the blades themselves are much the same, it's just the tang that got thinner.  At least I cannot see any difference with my eye.

On cellidor SAKs they added a indentation on the liner to occupy the extra room, that isn't so practical with a thick piece of alox.

Old and new liners:

Also note the slight difference in the blades.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

The older cadets without the washer were way before my time.  All the cadets Ive bought, both new, and new old stock all had the washer in them on the blade.

Was it a mod or a factory error do you think ?

According to the owner, it's not modified. He bought it from FelineVet.

Here's the image.

The Cadet on the right clearly has two washers.

I'm wondering if that could just be a factory error.  These are assembled by hand after all, and washers do tend to stick together when they are in a big pile.  Just a guess.

Ya that's not right at all is it.  is there a gap at the back between scale and spring?
