Dating Juice XE6
on: March 07, 2013, 09:46:54 PM
Hi
I posted yesterday in the Juice owners club thread a question about dating an XE6. I have got some photos now and thought it might be better to start a new thread.

I currently have two XE6 in my possesion. The first one (with the LEATHERMAN PAT PEND) logo was bought from from Amazon but the flat drivers were very stiff. I have got a replacement (with the LEATHERMAN) logo. This one has marginally better drivers but much worse pliers and looser scissors, so i am thinking of keeping the original and returning the replacement.
I notice that the logos are different. Am I correct in thinking that the pat pend is an older design?
Does anyone know when the design changed?
There are 8 digit codes on the box label if that helps at all?

They both seem to have the same logo on the scales and both say Leatherman Tool on the plier heads.

Thanks.

Open up the pliers and look inside at the liners. Inside you should see a 4-digit code in each handle (you might need to open up the drivers to see it).

That code is the month and year so 0611 is June 2011  :tu:

Thanks for the reply. I had read about looking for a code, but wasn't quite sure what i was looking for. The "pat pend" version has 0611 in both handles and the other one possibly has 0312 on one handle, but it seems very lightly etched and almost impossible to see. I can't make out anything on the other handle. Maybe I need better light and a magnifying glass.
 ???

Edit: do all new LM have the logo w/o pat pend? because of the differences and noticeably worse pliers I would be starting to worry i had got a fake by now if it had come from the bay or similar.

Look under the drivers. There's usually a date code there too. There are some Juice knock offs, but they are not labeled Leatherman and are noticably larger than the original.

Thanks for the replies. I'll look harder for the code.

Does anyone have any thoughts on when the logo changed?

Last year. I'll have to dig in the Juice club thread to give you an exact month they started appearing though.

EDIT: I think April/May 2012, but can't find the post to confirm.

Thanks. I had read through that thread once, and then scanned through again looking for changes in photos. I'll go and have another look.  :tu:

Edit: if mine is marked 0312 then it must be one of the first batch? Which must make it highly collectible and hugely valuable  :ahhh

Well I was just guesstimating. ;) I know they appeared in the first half of 2012, just wasn't sure of the month. But March may be the first month of the new logo. As for the collectors value ... I highly doubt it. :D
