Will a normal 91mm SAK blade fit in the Duke of Edinburgh knife?

In the UK there is a version of what's basically a Compact, but with a Phillips driver instead of the corkscrew, so kind of a Compact Super Tinker. Unfortunately it comes with a neutered non-pointy blade, so I was wondering whether it would be a straightforward mod to replace this with a normal pointy 91mm SAK blade, also would this need to be a blade from a donor knife with the combo tool layer, or could any 91mm SAK blade be used?

Or would it just be simpler to start with a Compact and mod that to have a Phillips or start with a Super Tinker and swap out the Blades/Openers layer with the Combo Tool layer from a compact?

In an ideal would also be nice to loose the hook and replace with an awl, but don't know how complicated that would be,

I would start with the Compact and swap in the Phillips. There is a guide around here somewhere. Hook to awl is finicky.

 :imws: again. :tu:

Compact + phillips is easiest.  Adding the awl needs a bit more work - an extra washer by the awl and a bit of a bend to the scissor spring to maintain the closing force on the scissors, IIRC.

Okay, I could do without the awl I guess, and with plus scales the hook isn't totally useless, as can be used to hold the pen, and the hook on the Compact has a nail file. Could also be useful for helping to put my bike chain back on the cogs when it comes off, which it does sometimes.

Would the Phillips driver from the Small Tinker fit the Compact, or would I need to use one from a normal Tinker? It's just that the Small Tinker is cheaper...

A Compact with Phillips would make a nice non-bulky EDC.

Yep, the phillips are the same on the 84mm and 91mm knives.

Okay, thanks, something to consider for a possible future project, then

I just ground the tip of the DofE blade to a sheepsfoot type shape. Problem solved  :)

FYI the DofE has the file-hook as well.

.... and the fixed scissor blade can be used as an awl if you're desperate.

Wait, really? Cool. Now Vic needs to start putting the nail file hook on the Climber...
