You do know Daniel Radcliffe has beaten you to the punch, right?

For me modding has always been about getting something that's "just right" for my tastes and circumstances.  I don't think I'll ever encounter the perfect MT or SAK as my needs vary depending on what I'm doing at the time.  That said, the Vic Spirit comes bloody close. ;)

He's always beating me to it. I was first in line to audition for Harry Potter but apparently they weren't looking for a balding overweight 47 year old. Stupid Daniel Radcliffe.

I mod because I like to tinker and make a tool just right. I also like to mod some of my tools to give them a cool look.

That sounds wonderful :dd: and terrifying at the same time :ahhh :o

 :o :like:
I know! Cool eh? Only problem is I will have to have at least one arm left on so I can open all the other tools.

You could be like Robocop :o RoboSAK has a nice sound to it  :D
I think my appearance would frighten people and I would be cast out of society, so more of a HoboSAK really. Can I rifle through your trash for leftovers Ponch? If you throw away some unopened cans I could use my can opener attachment.

Not many leftovers at my house  :D But I could keep you feed well enough and you could sleep either in the carport or maybe even the garage :salute:

Cool! I'm setting off now with a couple of loaves of bread to keep me going while I hitch rides to the US. When I get to the new world I should ask for directions to your car port yes?

Righto ponch, my nostrils are filled with the smell of old briney so I reckon I'm nearly at the beach. It shouldn't take me long to swim the atlantic (Bronze, Silver and Gold swimming badges!) so when I hit land I'll ask for directions to casa poncho. Muddy Pond and Cumberland Plateau sounds romantic (our muddy ponds are meh, and we have Cumberland sausages). Looking forward to my new life as a HoboSAK.  :salute:

Once you hit the beach you have to cross the Appalachian Mountain range through the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains, then down through the Sequatchie Valley before heading up to the Plateau :salute: From there tis but a hop, a skip and a jump to my house

I've realised now, halfway across the Atlantic that I'm glad I opted for a SAK mod rather than an LM because this sea water is murder on my tools. Pretty good phone reception though (my arm is getting tired from holding my phone above sea level). I reckon another 2 weeks of swimming and then I'll head for the Appalachians. Any tips on dealing with the locals?

Why do we mod....

Because we want OUR tool. Not the closest match provided by a mass manufacturer based on market research and cost analysis. We'll take their safe bet. And maybe a couple of their other safe bets. Take their safe bets APART! Put them back together. Move something, remove, exchange, add, reshape, optimize for our needs. Not optimized to sell thirty thousand units a year at maximum profit, but optimized to do what we need. If there is a compromise, it's our compromise- if we leave something out it is because we're pretty sure we don't need it. If we add something, it's because we know we need it. And if we change something cosmetic along the way, change the scale materiall, dura or cerakote it, blue or case harden or anodize it, add a lanyard or a custom sheath, it is because it is OUR tool now. Not Leatherman or SOG or Gerber's, not Victorinox or CRKT or Buck or Ka-Bar's. It is ours. Noone else's, and they mess with our tools at their own risk. When you  mod not only do spend more and work more for that tool, you think, sweat, and often bleed for, in and on that tool, so you can make it any color you want now.

We mod because we are not mere consumers. We are not just the users of tools. We are the makers of tools. We make OUR tool. A modern modder is the decedent of that guy who looked at a broken rock with a sharp edge and thought to himself "I could hit it again with another rock and make it fit my hand better AND sharper". We have the genes of the guy who wasn't afraid of a fire or a wolf and tamed it. We have the blood of whomever it was who picked up an lobster and said "this looks tasty". We are from and of the people who got sick of being rained on and fighting with bears and cats about caves and said "I can make my own cave". Our ancestors didn't make do. We don't make do.

We make better.

I just like taking stuff apart, then see if I can get it back together. I will maybe tweak little things, but I really just enjoy seeing how things work.

I mod because I get frustrated with commercial tools. To get what I want, I need to make adjustments. I appreciate that the manufacturers must strive for commercial success, but that means accepting compromise.

Where I can (within the limits of my abilities and finances) I like to try and engineer some of that compromise out. It may be a compromise on quality/function, on tool selection, or on legality. It may be that the tool set I require falls between two commercial offerings, or maybe I just want something that isn't commercially viable.

Right now I have several modified tools which are better for me than their nearest commercial offerings. I don't expect others to like them, nor expect the manufacturers to have achieved what I did (unless they were adjustments of quality - *cough* CS4 *cough*). All that matters is that the tools work for me.
