Wenger Blackout 63 - Impressions
on: March 25, 2013, 10:32:15 AM
Since winning this Blacout EvoGrip 63 from their Wenger NA facebook page have carried it but a few times. Would consider this for someone wanting minimal tools and not having to open cans with it - unless they was desperate.

Arrived in an attractive looking presentation box.

The knife very light in weight. One would almost assuredly want a lanyard of some sort attached to it, since it hardly has any bulk to it. The lanyard split-ring does comes blackened, it won't stay that way for long.  The gripping feels more like am applied surface over the cellidor scales. With a white on red cross on one side.

Accessories are near the lanyard attachment area, and slider over the liner - not like the Victorinox that sides over the scale. The toothpick is black, and the tweezers are black on both the end and the metal. Tweezers are an open V design.
The knife does not come with the corkscrew driver, so when ordering one it will be grey. Does not appear to be a black version on Wenger's company website.

Overall it is a great light weight knife. Single large blade, corkscrew, and a thin combination opener/flat driver.

Nice little write up mate :tu:

Are you giving the little Wenger much pocket time, and how is the black finish standing up?

I keep looking at the black beauty version of the Evo11,but its £35-40 more than the standard model

  Per Wenger's site:
Quote
The Blackout Series incorporates the exceptional functionality and Swiss craftsmanship found in every Wenger Swiss Army Knife. Each model is encased in two black gloss EvoGrip handles with non-slip, flat-black rubber inserts. Open any tool and the black PVD coating quickly becomes the center of attention. The Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) finish on every implement is non-reflective, durable, very hard and permanent. Chosen by some of the best watch makers in the world, as well as high-performance engine manufacturers, PVD is as attractive as it is resilient.

The black coating seems to be best on the blade and combination tool. Tried to open a can this morning and quite frankly had a time with it. Still, as much as I fought that can still did not scratch the finish on the blade. This PVD is far superior to Black Oxide as far as sharp metal to metal contact.
Am quite amazed, since the black coating on the back scale has already started to pop off on the blade pivot end.

As to the fight of the large peach can, almost has to stand the can opener on its head and angle it off to one side in order to get the can grabber to stop slipping off. Really, if you had no other means to open a can... and was not starving to death... or have staved while using it... get another can opener!

Used my ASO Climber's can opener on the other half of the can and opened that half in mere seconds. The Blackout 63 on the other hand, a few minutes later and several attempts had managed to barely get half of the tin can opened.

Left side was from the Blackout 63, right side my ASO Climber.

Get the larger one, stay away from this one. That thin combo tool is a pain in the smurf to open cans with. And the force & angle needed to open a can will slip the driver over the lanyard attachment. Honestly thought I broke it, but seen it had just slipped up and over. (whew)

So far, the finish is the best blackened I have come across yet!

Simple pin modification, & a peek under the scales.  :D

Inside. Use a thinner pin, heat it up, carefully poke through the scale.
