Anyone know where I might pick up a BlackTip??
on: April 01, 2013, 10:19:40 AM
Well, I recently got the PT-540. Cheers Nikos  :salute:

I'm now gunning for it's BIG brother the BlackTip  :ahhh

It seems to be pretty elusive, has anyone seen one for sale?

I've done the usual scout, but nothing's come up.

Anybody??

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Hmmm, obviously another member of the "bigger is better (or is at least interesting)" MTo collector's sub-group (I've just bought a Paladin PT-540 and a SOG Blacktip, but haven't taken delivery of either yet).

I purchased my Balcktip from Westmarine.com for $69.99 (with free US shipping):

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=11151&partNumber=11752177&langId=-1&searchKeyword=blacktip+multi-tool#.UVlYeRxqn4U

They were willing to ship to Oz, but freight was almost as dear as the tool itself, so I had it sent to my
"US freight forwarding agent" (shipping within the US is free).

This particular item doesn't come up with a search including "SOG" because WestMarine have listed it as "BLACKTIP Fisherman's II Multi-Tool".  You have no doubt discovered there are a gazillion products which include "blacktip" in their name/description.

I hope that helps.

Cheers for the heads up Gregsy'

I was actually gunning for the PT-540 before xmas, but couldn't justify the outlay at that time. I've since seen mention of the BlackTip, and as you say the "Bigger Is Better" mentality is fairly addictive .

I see what you mean about shipping - the economy route is still $59!! :ahhh

I'll ponder it for a few days - I've absolutely no intention of using it, but since when is that an issue - lol

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I got a flyer in the mail today from West Marine, all the Blacktip tools are on sale this month.  I went to the store this afternoon at 5:10 and they closed at 5:00!  I will make a trip tomorrow and see what they have available and the price.

Dear old Def????

Seriously, I called West Marine this morning because I tried to order the Wave, bit kit and light combo and use a $ 10.00 coupon that I had...customer service pointed out to me that the flyer was for a future dated sale April 25th through May 5th.  The Blacktip will be 52.50 after the 25% off and items of $ 50.00 or more qualify for free shipping at least in the US.  West Marine has opened stores in Canada and might give free shipping from those stores as well.  And the website offers free shipping to a local store as well.

And they still have plenty of the Wave, bit kit and P3 Lenser combos at $ 47.90 each.

The Blacktip's went on sale today at West Marine and the total cost with sales tax is $ 56.69 each.  I picked up one for Tosh and if anyone else wants one please send me a Private Message.

$52.49 for one shipped? Ordered. Cripes, what's with prices all of a sudden? Wave with bit kit for $49, Surge for $47, now this? I'm gonna need a bigger toolbox.

The Blacktip is a good deal at $ 52.49 and last November it was $ 20.00 off for a price of $ 49.99.  I received 2 of the Waves with the bit kits yesterday and they are well worth the money.

It is strange that these deals are turning up now but 2 of them are at West Marine and they might be trying to reduce slow inventory before the end of the year.  West Marine had some serious markdowns on the Fuse and Kick tools last year in November and December.

After reading this thread, I just ordered one! I am a big fan of larger multi tools, and I like the looks of the pliers. I am guessing this is a discontinued SOG model.

It's not discontinued as far as I know.  This is special run of the SOG tools much like the Paladin tools are as well.  The Blacktip as we call it is really a Fisherman's Multitool II in West Marine speak.  It is a much larger tool than the PowerLock and all in all kinda neat.

I just got it today and it seems pretty solid. The only thing I was disappointed in was that it is made in China. I thought SOG equipment was made here in the US. I have a Powerlock and a Powerassist, and they are both made in the USA, at least that what it states on the package and instructions. No markings on the tools indicate country of origin, so maybe SOG is trying to hide where they are made. Probably will not buy another one, but I said that about Gerber, and I use a Fit every day at work! I am not surprised though. I am glad I caught it on sale. Got it for $56.00 shipped with tax!

Got one too. Couldn't resist, lol.
Quality is better than my powerlock. I don't like the powerassist-like stuff too much too, a little clunky for the safety and destroys fingers to pull blade out/in :P

The blade itself is otherwise nice.. and the pliers.. mwahaha so huge :)
I like how the needle tip is still relatively small compared to the size of the tool.
The file is also better than the file of my powerlock.

If it's good quality and well made, does it matter if it wasn't made in the US? AFAIK, no one complains that Victorinox tools aren't...

That is because the Swiss (As well as the Germans, and companies here in the US) are known to make quality knives. The Chinese are not. Nothing is ever outsourced to China to improve quality, it is to reduce production costs. Therefore you get a tool that is not as well made as it could be.  I am not saying they are all junk. I have several Gerbers that are good quality, but they also all cost me less than $40.00 a piece. This tool is good quality also, and I am happy with it. I was just uninformed and did not realize SOG outsourced some or all of their production. It is because of these factors that I just do not want to put too much money into a Chinese made tool. I will gladly pay $100.00 plus for a Victorinox or a Wenger, and I just did (Ranger Grip), but those companies are world renowned for their quality, and I will pay more for it.

im surprised at the tools quality of the blacktip vs my powerlock. the lock is also a lot better than the powerlock.
I'm guessing the powerassist is as good.
Too bad the assist blades take all the space of the 2nd handle. I'd like a powerlock but with the powerassist/blacktiplock and tool quality ;-)

I suppose buying 2 powerassist or 2 blacktip and mixing handles work but.. meh.
