And on beetle smashing...

Show content
I took the entire story, and Tyrion's deep fascination with his cousin's desire to destroy... along with Jaime's comment on how unimportant the act was, compared to all the people who die as a sort of allegory to the world they live in. The great, unstoppable fate eventually crushing them, with a purpose none could comprehend. Tyrion shows his own nature very clearly in this scene. Given all the power in the world to callously, and pointlessly crush even something so seemingly unimportant as a bug, something completely incapable of resisting his power, he instead releases it. It feels to me strangely like one of the most noble deeds we see on the show.

The Mountain, known as a needlessly brutal fiend, crushes 'the bug'. And seals Tyrion's fate. So, Tyrion is a bug, to the fates, and a God to bugs. In a fairy tale, that little bug he spared would gnaw through the ropes to free him at an opportune moment, or whatever, but in this world, it was probably just stepped on off screen by a guard later that afternoon.

I'm curious if this is about how others read that scene.

For those who didn't like the ending of the last episode, here's an alternative ending:

I still prefer the original.

The Hound seems... 'terribly concerned' for Joffrey's wellbeing in that clip.

Can someone explain to me what Game of Thrones is about? I've asked numerous people I work with who watch it and no one has been able to give me a clear answer.

Can someone explain to me what Game of Thrones is about? I've asked numerous people I work with who watch it and no one has been able to give me a clear answer.

HOPEFULLY no spoilers.

The story takes place in a fantasy world something akin to the Middle Ages of Earth. There is magic in the world, but it has all but died out at the start of the story. Most of the story takes place on the western continent, called Westeros. It's divided into 7 Kingdoms. The seasons are rather random in the world, so a summer may last many years, and a winter may last many years. It has been summer for something like 7 years now. Bountiful crops, no long periods of starvation, etc. There are Old Gods, a pantheon of 7 (The Father, The Mother, The Maiden, The Crone, The Warrior, The Smith, and The Stranger), and there is a New God, a singular monotheistic deity.

The story can be explained most succinctly by saying that it's about the noble houses from the various kingdoms, each trying to exert their control over Westeros. Virtually every character of any importance claims membership of a noble 'House', or allegiance to one. In addition, each house has a sigil, an animal that represents them.

This all leads to blackmail, assassination, plots, rumors, war, while real external threats loom on the horizon, largely unnoticed by the kingdoms as they do their best to kill each other. Magic is returning to the world, and with it, ancient evils.

The series of books is called 'A Song of Ice and Fire', and it is very much building to that.

The cast of characters is VERY large, and can be confusing. There is a fair amount of nudity, and copious amounts of violence. Characters you assume have some kind of 'plot immunity', meaning that they're important, so can't die, in fact die left and right.

All of the scheming is trying to get one member from some noble house onto the throne, and take over the seven kingdoms. Hence 'a Game of Thrones'.

Hope this helps some.

Both of these are fairly true. :D

There seems to be a rule that if there needs to be a big slow scene of exposition, you might as well have naked folks doing stuff in the background.

Read somewhere that the Hound is a replacement direwolf to protect the the Stark girls when they need it? My favorite quote of his; The Hound: You're a talker. Listening to talkers makes me thirsty and hungry. Think I'll take two chickens.
Polliver: You don't seem to understand the situation.
The Hound: I understand that if any more words come pouring out your smurf mouth, I'm going to have to eat every smurfing chicken in this room.
Polliver: You lived your life for the king. You're going to die for some chickens?
The Hound: Someone is.

Just finished an unabridged dramatisation of the third book on audible. The TV series is a bit tame in places!

Rather than spoil the series though, I'm even more looking forward to the next few episodes to see how they pull off all the twists in a couple of hours!

Ah audio books, good idea.  I used to listen to those while I worked, but I listened to all the ones I had.  Ive not read any of the books of this series, so I think I will get them and listen while I work in the shop tomorrow.  :tu:

Great for long drives. The unabridged Audible.com books are astoundingly well produced these days, like watching a movie in your head!

Funny moment. The show is on TV here, and my mother was watching it a bit. (she doesn't follow the show) All of a sudden she shouts out in astonishment while watching a scene happening in King's Landing: "I know that place, I was there!"

Made me smile. :D

Just finished s4 ep 9.

Will be watching s4 ep 10 very soon (within minutes).

Ep 9 seems to be about the most expensive episode to date. They really threw a chunk of budget into it. Lots of special effects, lots of extras, lots of practical effects.

Also... wow.

Does anyone else find this series a bit emotionally exhausting?

I would say that there were a LOT of things that changed in the last 2 eps. Wow.

Im wondering if the books and shows are pretty much in line with each other.  Im most of the way through the first book now and its pretty much exactly as portrayed in the show.

With Tyrion killing is father he really fullfilled the "Lanasters always pay their debts" line.  Since his father treated him like crap all his life, he paid him back well.
