Can an original Leatherman Tool Adapter be modified to work with newer tools?

Can the original Leatherman Tool Adapter be modified to work with the newer tools?  Basically trim off the two bent pieces, and maybe grind off the two little nubs so it will work more like the newer, universal tool adapter?
