Best Friend's Wedding Gift
on: July 31, 2007, 03:20:54 AM
My long-time best friend is getting married in a few weeks, and I'm going to get him a multi for the occasion. He's a little of a paradox, he grew up doing farm work and working hard in general, but his real interest in computers. Right now hes doing sales for a warehouse, but that job probably won't last long so I can't base the tool on his job. I know he used to have an original SuperTool, and liked it, but eventually he broke the tip of the pliars of using it very hard. (Hmm.. I had forgotten about that, and I'll have to see if he still has it because I'm sure LM would replace it.) Anyhow, I can't decide which one, so help me make up my mind.  :D I figured I'd stay with Leatherman, since they are the tools I know best, and I know he liked his. I ruled out the Core because I wanted to get something different than his SuperTool.

Thanks for your help.  :) Choosing can be hard work!  ???

I'd go with the Charge...That's the one with the mini drivers right?  Those work well with computer stuff ;D

I voted Charge too. He'll love it. A close second place would be the Surge. The big tool may be appreciated if he still does any farm work.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

If he liked the super tool, I'd recommend a swiss tool...the super tools are tough, but the swiss tool takes it to the next level...gotta love the swiss!

Tim (Felinevet) ships instantly and can usually get a package almost anywhere in the US in two days.  He's also got the best prices on any current issue models.  I'd suggest sending him an email with whatever you decide on before looking anywhere else.

Either the Squirt with the wire cutters, or a Spirit.

If he really is your best friend, cost is no object.

Agreed, I had decided to try to get him the tool he'd like best, not the cheapest. We've been best friends since 5th grade, and now we're 24 & 25, and he paid his way out to Oregon for my wedding, so I'd better be willing to ignore the price tag!  :D

If he liked his Super Tool, it seems likely a Core would be well received.  I, too, was well satisfied by my Super Tool, and now find the Core an excellent upgrade, my favorite for semi-serious work (serious work requires dedicated tools).  However, if he still has the Super Tool with broken plier tip, that could be returned for warranty repair by Leatherman.  Then, a Core would be redundant.

Although I own a number of Leatherman products, each filling a particular niche in my EDC, they seem to me more "toolish" than the sort of thing a person brings to "show and tell."

For something completely different, yet so cool, I think you can't go wrong with a Vic Spirit Plus.  It satisfies all wedding gift requirements: useful, appropriately expensive for the occasion and elegant.  Killer (and this from a Leatherman guy!)

Hmm... that got me thinking. Maybe a two-for-one deal could be in order. How about an E4 for the keychain edc, and a core for the real work? Too many options :ahhh ! Thanks for all the input by the way. I'm going to have to pull the trigger in the next few days, so I've apprecieated it.

PS. To all the swiss replies: A Spirit does seem like a great wedding present. It isn't what I would normally choose, but it's class and elegence are just asking for an occasion like this, so i'm still debating. But... what if he loved it and turned Swiss on me! I think our friendship could weather that storm, but it could sure be a test!  :D

Well, I went with the poll, and just ordered a new AL, along with a pink S4 for my wife birthday coming up. All that money spent on tools, and none of it for me!  :( :D
By the way, if this gift sparks a multi-tool interest for my friend, I'll be sure to show him what the swiss have to offer as well! Thanks for the input.  :)

With a quality tool like any of the ones mentioned above, your friend will be forever in your debt... which is great when you need to move or something!

Well, he's the one that'll be moving soon, and I had better help him out! He's helped me move twice now, always making sure that I don't move without him helping. Definetly a good friend, but now its my turn to be one! Maybe it'll be a good chance to use our tools, mine always get a good workout during moving times.

You'll find a lot of stuff to work on in the old house after you've moved his tools to the OTHER house

Well, the Charge Al just arived, in the gift tin and everything. I checked it all out (and the pink S4 for my wife) and found no flaws or problems whatsoever.  :) I'm always a little nervous when I order these thing without being able to see them! Friends wedding is in a week and a half, so his time is coming fast! It should be an interesting wedding, their having it in a big open barn. And I'm going drive some big Jaguar (I don't know which though...) right up to the front to drop him off. I'm just hopping I don't do something stupid and run over anyone.  :o

Little update: my wife hadn't bought a gift yet for the bride, and she thinks we should give these two to them, and order a new S4 for herself. Looks like these two can stay together...  :)

Yeah, she's pretty cool. I don't know if she's ever seen the Nail Clipper. Maybe I should show her that before we get her the S4... Hopefullly they don't get lost as often as regular nail clippers do!  :o
