Why not? It wasn't the retailer that made the good, they're just part of the chain. And isn't there a little bit of caveat emptor still applicable?
The retailer is the part of the chain that the customer has the contract with, they are the part that took the money and supplied the goods.
In this country we can go directly to the manufacturer/importer or to the retailer - our choice.
It just isn't acceptable for a retailer to take your money and provide defective goods and then to say "nothing to do with me, send it to Switzerland it is their product".
