Help me spend $40...
on: June 06, 2013, 12:28:23 AM
I have an agreement with the missus that I will only spend what is left in my slush fund on MTs for the remained of the year. As it is, I am down to my last $40. I come to you all seeking guidance as to the best way to spend it in the MT Realm. I am eyeing a Gerber Flik... But I can probably be persuaded otherwise. I have a considerable number of Leatherman and a variety of SAKs. So I am asking what you would buy if you only had $40 to spend on MTs for the remainer of the year?

Many Thanks!

I would buy the wife flowers, some tasty candy, make her a nice dinner and try to persuade her to raise the multi allowance. :D

How could I forget the wine.

On a more serious note, have you considered the Gerber Balance? It seems to get good reviews here and it's around the $40 mark on eBay.

Do you have a Rebar?  It's the only multitool I can think of that is around $40.  It sounds like you're looking to get something besides a Leatherman or SAK though, but I don't know of many others.  I'm not that knowledgeable of any MTs besides LM and Vic

Personally I didn't care for the Flik or the Freehand.  I sold the Flik, still have the BO Freehand.  The pliers are great, the blades mediocre and the tools horrible.  The best thing about the Freehand other than the pliers is the scissors and the prybar, and the Flik doesn't even have the prybar.  Don't even start me on the can opener or phillips screwdriver, possibly the worst on any tool I've ever owned.

Of all the tools I've seen recently for $40 I think I'd go with the Rebar or a new SAK Deluxe Tinker, or whatever floats your boat in the SAK line.

I do have a Rebar and it is a great tool! I also have a Brand New Deluxe Tinker as well as 3 Deluxe Climbers. The wife has a classic on her keychain and she poached my Wingman for her office.
I recently had a look at a Gerber MP400. Anyone have any thoughts on those?

  • Don't judge a tool by it's brand

The MP400 is a good choisem also. Got one not so long ago, and I really like it. Those sliding pliers are a joy to fiddle with :D

I just dropped the $40 on a BO Rebar... The one that I already have is Stainless so I figured I'd complete the set

Deez - start collecting spare coins and dollar bills.  They add up pretty fast.  Take them to a Coinstar machine and convert them to an Amazon gift card (there is no fee to do this).  Then buy for yourself whatever you dang want, and Mrs. Nittles won't know the difference.
