Can someone give some insight on this SAK?
on: May 18, 2013, 11:27:45 PM
Long story short, today was cleaning day for my wife and I. We've been in our house 5 years and we decided it was time to clean out the basement.

We were digging out the boxes under the stairs and we found a box that must have been from the previous owner because we didn't recognize anything in it. At the bottom was this SAK. I thought it was interesting because there is no cross logo on the scales, but it says Victorinox on the back of the blade. It's in OK shape, but it need a good cleaning.

Stamped on the can opener is "+PAT."

On one side of the blade it says "ELINOX"

On the other side it says" VICTORINOX SWITZERLAND STAINLESS ROSTFREI".

Can anyone share some knowledge on this knife?

Spot on. It's a pretty nice one, too - doesn't look like the blade has been sharpened or the fine screwdriver bent - both very common problems with these knives. Cleaned up this is a great collector or worth something on eBay (depending on how generous JimyLee is being that day). What I personally consider "unusual" more than "rare" (they are regularly available on eBay), but very much in demand because of it's unique St Christopher scale inlay and use of the now discontinued file screwdriver. I'd estimate this one is from 1963-1965, give or take a year or so.

Thank you for the approximate date jazzbass! As far as condition, the fine screwdriver has an ever so slight twist to it, and the blade has been definitely used but there are no nicks or flat spots. There is however a minor bend about .25" - .375" from the tip. I'm very confident both tools can be fixed.

To be honest, I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. This is actually the first real SAK I've ever owned, besides a Vic Classic. I've also never found anything this cool before.

Is there any tips for cleaning this thing up anywhere? I've seen some Leathermans cleaned by an extended soak in WD40 but I have no idea if that's safe for scales.

Thanks again for all the great info!

If it was mine I would take a metal brush to the file and a toothbrush under running hot water to the rest and nothing else.  Clean out the insides with a wood toothpick if necessary.  A very little machine oil on the ends toward each hinge-pin. You have a reliable respectable veteran vintage and special SAK.
Maybe don't open all the blades at once on such an old knife - puts extra stress on the (alox?) dividers at the rivet-pin holes.
