VERY nice!  :tu:  The Executive is always on my keys, I'd like to find a Director to go along with it in the collection...

Nice!
I would like to have at least one of every scale pattern available. Do yours all have the same design?

I like the old stainless steel scales that were used on the smaller SAKs. I wish they won't be discontinued. There is something about a solid and heavy feel they add, the metal uniformity. Little beauties.

My dream is a MiniChamp in SS scales (like from a Broker)

That's a great idea; I'd love a SS Minichamp.  Broker's often come up very inexpensive new from retailers or ebay.  I like the heavy solid scales as well.  I have a 'user' Director that's a little scratched up that I often slip into a pocket as an extra.  Now that the hot weather is here I'm sure with reduced cargo capacity it will be in my pocket more often.

In the old days the SS scales were riveted and then polished to make the rivest invisible, but I'm not sure about the current ones.  I'll have to take a look when I get the chance.

Went through all my 74mm stainless Vics (Windsor, Prince, Director, Escort) and came up with six different patterns. Victorinox doesn't distinguish between the patterns by name, refering to all as 'engine turned steel'. The following names are for my own reference. The last two digits of the stock number apparently refer to the pattern, and I've given those where I know them.

1. Feathers (top) because of its appearance to the feathers on an arrow; and Mixed (bottom) because of its combination of straight lines and hatchers (# .39).

2. Brushed (top), and Lines (bottom) with straight lines (#.31).

3. The final pair at first glance appear identical but examination under a magnifying glass show they are rather different. In the knife on the left the pattern is a series of short arcs coming together at a point, with the point over the crown of the arc below; forming a series of small overlapping waves (Waves).

The pattern on the right consists of parallel wavy lines touching at regular intervals and forming a diamond pattern (Diamond).

There may be other patterns I'm not aware of.

Thanks for the info Karl. Apparently I am still missing Feathers and Waves :)
I missed out on a Feathers one a while ago, those appear to be a bit uncommon.

Nice summary.  I think Victorinox was not too careful with the design numbers, or they might have changed which numbers were assigned to which patterns over time.  Also the information I've always come across indicates that .39 can represent any number of patterns, so it is likely there are small batches or special designes done for promotional models.

Besides the matt finish, there also appears to be a polished version, and ribbed version that is not an engine turned (Guilloché) design.  I've seen the ribbed in 58mm, and 75mm, I'm pretty sure in 74mm too, but it's too early in the morning to swear to it.

Was looking through my 75mm - 84mm stainless Pocket Pals, Accountants, etc. There are some duplicate patterns, Feathers, Lines, Diamonds. However there are also a half-dozen other patterns that don't show up on my 84mm Windsors, Directors, etc. Don't know if the patterns are unique to the smaller knives, or were used on everything, and I just never managed to pick them up.

Here are some more versions of engine-turned stainless handles.

1. Three 75mm knives. The top is a three-blade Accountant, the other are two-blade Pocket Pals (?). Basket-weave, Zigzag; and Banded, featuring alternating bands of fine zigzags with smooth bands. The second photo is a closeup showing the complex patterns for the Zigzag and Basket-weave. (couldn't get a good shot of the Banded)

Poto #3 is a couple of 84mm knives, two- and three blades. They have alternating bands of straight and wavy lines, with the one on the right having narrower bands of wavy lines. Not sure what to call them (Banded B and Banded C ?)

This one is 58mm, but I like how the Victorinox shield is machined on the scale.  In the past they did advertising/promotional knives like this and it looks really good. Those would have been some quality promotional items.

There appear to be at least 8 different patterns if you include the brushed stainless steel scales (which technically is not a guilloché pattern at all).

Feathers, Mixed, Brushed, Lines, Waves, Diamond, Zigzag and Waves&Lines. That last one needs a better name.

It's this one:

But I also bought one without a company logo last week (top right):

I'll try to make pictures of each pattern this weekend.

Oh funny thing, my only Diamond one actually has Waves on the other side :D

Those are the patterns/designs of my victorinox stainless steel knives. What I`ve heard from victorinox, they are certain that there are 14 different patterns of stainless steel scales based on what they have in their own collection.
I`m pretty sure that those were available in 58 mm, 65 mm, 74 mm, 75 mm and 84 mm.

That "feather" pattern is the last one on my compilation, down right. But there`s a mistake as you can see (left/right side), I had to change it. I`m sure there are more designs left, so if anybody has a stainless steel victorinox knife with a different pattern than those 16 I know, would be great to show me so I can add them.

In the 1942 elsener catalog, there are some patterns shown I`ve never seen in real, for example on page 32 and 33. But they look great!

Good question, I dont really know. I don`t think I`ve seen this design before. Had to check my knives. From the first glance, this design looks identical to the "wave" design, just that the scale went 2 times trough the same guilloche machine. I`m not sure if this was a regular design or just a factory "mistake".

No, I don't think so. The waves/arcs are quite different.
Lets see if I can make some close ups.

My close up pictures failed completely. But I think the difference is clear in Karl's picture here.

What he calls "Waves" are parallel series of arcs touching at a point above the center of the arc below. What he calls "Diamond" is the one top right in your compilation.

To make things more confusing in my opinion Diamond looks more like waves to me than the one with the arcs. More "wavy" :)

Ok now I see. But in my compilation, the one on the top on the right side is a round, S-shaped pattern, arcs, not like the "diamond", that indeed looks more like "waves". The one on Karls picture on the left side is like the one in my compilation in the second row on the right side, but without those lines in the center.

I`ll check my knives when I`m at home. It seems than there are a lot of different designs out there :-)

Confusing, isn't it? :)

To me, it's like this. Each photo shows the complete width of the knife.

Waves: arcs that connect in a sharp point:

Diamond, a "wavy", round pattern, sines maybe?

And a new one (to me at least), "waves and lines". Well, those are not really waves. More like... snakes? Inconsistent shapes by the way.
