Really good news indeed! I was sure we were stuck with the crap plastic. I am stuck with those plastic ones on couple of exotic scaled SwissChamps among other SAKs and I hate them. They scratch and fog in no time. Also are easily attacked by alcohol (same if not worse than Cellidor is).

Now only if the new transparent plastic frame would be as resistant as the old gray one. The old grey one appeared that it was not a single plastic piece (the frame caps appear to be separately applied from the sides, holding the lens in place), the lens does not seem that it can be simply removed with a little pressure.

This means I can reuse the nice new glass lenses and make Al or Ti bodies for them.. AND HAVE A NICE EXPLORER LAYER!!!!!

I guess you can tell I was VERY happy with this discovery. :D

I'm hearing voices in my head saying I need an Explorer Plus

Has anyone seen the new glass magnifier on models other than the Swisschamp?

My Champion plus that I just bought seems to have it (I am 99% sure, not 100% sure)

I should add that I have one of the New SwissChamps that has the new glass, so I am ALMOST sure my Champion has the glass too

I convinced the voices that a Champion Plus (for $15 less than the Explorer Plus) was what they really meant.... for now.

Has anyone bought an Explorer plus from somewhere online in Europe and gotten the glass version yet? Tempted to get one but I don't want to end up with the plastic kind. :P

It's not a direct answer to your question but I've had a new Swisschamp with the new glass magnifier.

evolution of magnifying glass  :salute:

:tu: :salute:

I see you updated the wiki page on it and I agree that the 2004 to 2007 appears a bit too big of a time frame. Also the new glass style  in 2012 (probably late 2012) it's strange that no one notised it till the summer of 2013. splico told me that even our local distributors/warranty shop didn't know of the change until he phoned them last week.

Should we upload the PDF to the wiki or add it as a pic to the tools galleries and put a link to it under the "According to Victorinox" part of the wiki page?

Well if the warranty shop tried to repair one they'd notice.  :D  It wasnt only the mag glass that changed, but the spring and phillips too and none of those 3 parts are interchangeable with the old.

I think we can get our own photo update, I don't think we need the Vic stuff on the Wiki, I'm sure many people here will archive it if it becomes important.  Maybe use that picture from Syph007 that shows it quite clearly and with the lens popped out.  I didn't mention that part on the wiki yet.

I wonder why the new lens pops out? Is it just the way they made the frame or is there a point to it being detachable?

Lowest possible production cost for that frame, probably. The older matte gray frames were not know to easily pop the glass lens out.

Doubt that is by purpose to easy lens changes. First, the lens itself used to be plastic, one piece with the frame, for quite some time. That plastic was scratched by anything touching it, even a cleaning cloth, and was easily attacked by alcohol and other solvents, rendering the lens fogged. Based on that one may think that Vic did not pay much consideration for the mag glass being possibly scratched and needing replacement. And for the new one being made of glass, where would replacements be made except in their own repair shops, thus not being user replaceable parts like plastic scales or T&T.

I really hope they done kill off the 93 alox.  If I was making decisions, I sure wouldnt!  Id start pumping out more colors and options... I can only imagine how cheaply they could produce a pioneer with scissors if they chose to!

How prophetic, OB1... Would you have also named it the Pioneer X? :D  Hmmm...  maybe this post was what motivated Vic to create the Pioneer X.  Nice.  Thanks for giving them direction. :drink:

I suspect my efforts had some impact on their decision.  :D

Im not a fan of the name and the nail nick on the wrong side problem.  In fact I loathe using one like that, but at least they finally made alox with scissors.  They stated for many years they wouldnt.
