After about a month on the keychain. It was clean when I put it on it. What are your experiences with these?

Oh wow, that does not look good! Now I'm happy I never bought one, I have been considering the widgy bars for a long time, I was just waiting for something else to order from the survival shop...

Accorcing to County Comm its D-9 steel (more about it here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/857042-D9-steel). Sounds like it should be stainless to a certain degree. Have you had any problems with other steel tools you carry on a daily basis?

Oh D9 is an odd choice.  Thats pretty much just 316 with some Ti in there.  Dont think it would be a good stainless, but I would have expected better than that.

Welcome, thefrank! Schön Dich auch hier zu sehen.

I do usually have problems with non stainless steels rusting on me. My Leathermans do it all the time. :D But this was too fast even for me.  :-\

Thanks!  :tu: I'm reading here pretty regularly, I just don't post too often!

Have you tried to contact CC and see whether they maybe had a problem with one of their batches? I guess if this was a common problem we would read more often about it!

IIRC, in an older thread, it was determined that the "D9" steel used in the widgy bars aren't actually D9, but a different alloy, despite CC claiming it as such; the bars I have from a couple years back definitely have patina on them, but they're quite usable still.  The steel they use, though, is a mystery.

I got it as an extra in a trade a couple of years ago but I didn't carry it on the keyring. It did have a bit of patina on it but this now is red rust. I'll unwrap it and sand it a bit and polish it. We'll see how it holds up.

Mine got that suface rust like that fairly quickly, but never really got any worse after that. It was more of a brown patina lol. A few weeks ago I actually painted the whole thing with a few coats of grey primer and left it at that. Dont know why I bothered since I've owned the thing for about 4 years and never once actually used it for anything.

A while ago I remember seeing a supplier listing these for sale with 2 grades available. As well as the standard grade they had some with surface rust at a discount (but sold out when I viewed). Maybe this is just a coincidence or maybe there was one or batches prone to rusting?

Okay, I take it back, even after a couple years of neglect, one of which was in a humid basement, mine never got THAT bad.

My regular wedgy bar is full of black patina but no red rust, perhaps clean it with wire brush then try induce some artificial patina with vinegar and see if it helps?
