Computer has forgotten how part of itself works
on: June 08, 2013, 07:23:01 PM
On the front of my tower unit is an integral cardreader which takes SD, Micro SD, USB and other random things I've never needed. It's been the easiest thing in the world for uploading piccies .... unfortunately the computer seems to no longer recognise it's existance

Can anyone tell me what I can click on to make it realise that it has a load of extra drives that should be listed in windows explorer so I can use the reader again?

Try turning it off and then unplugging the power cord for a minute or two. Sounds crazy but it often fixes problems like this and it's easy to try.

I did a restart, but didn't try completely powering down like that .... I'll give it a try

What theonew said. Turn it off, open the tower, find the cable that goes out of the reader and unplug it but remember the port. Turn it on and off again. ::) connect the cable you disconnect and turn it on again.

Or do it Tony style. Use a hammer.

I'm sure smarter members than I will come along shortly and help you out.

Most of the advice so far is pretty much what I'd do. Be sure whatever you unplug goes back the same way you found it. It could be that the USB port(typically those hubs are USB devices) died as well, so another port if available may also be a solution. It sounds like that or windows has forgotten the device exists, so another option would be to run the new hardware wizard to see if it finds it...

The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Cured! We're in! :nanadance:

Thanks guys. The full power down sorted it .... though it must have had a lot of stuff to sort out, it was stuck on the welcome screen for a loooong time while it get itself back together again. I had actually told it to check for new hardware before, and it just shrugged it's shoulders and said nope  :P I knew I'd be missing something glaringly obvious, and I knew you lot would put me right  :D

Cheers fellers
