Minichamp or rambler ?
on: June 18, 2013, 10:17:41 PM
I've had a minichamp on my keyring
For ages now, but picked up a rambler
Today and  now can't decide which to edc.The slimness
Of the rambler would be better in the pocket.
Has anyone else had the same dilemma ?

I've tried the MiniChamp and the Manager...I gave the MiniChamp away today to my boss, still have the Manager on my house keys, and a +B Rambler on my work keys.

I found he MiniChamp just too heavy for a keyring

Rambler all the way. :salute: Best keychain SAK in my opinion. Have been carrying on my car keys for years now.

The Minichamp just has too many tools that I don't use so I didn't even get it since it wouldn't see much use. The Rambler on the other hand was the only SAK that I had stolen so far

For me, the Mini Champ has too many tools that just take up space and would never get used.  I could lose the extra blade, the cuticle pusher, the orange peeler and the nail file.  These are just things that I would never use in a million years.  What you have left after removing that stuff is basically the Manager.  When its in the bottom of my pocket, I can't really tell if its a Classic, Rambler or Manager, so I go with the one with (for me) the most utility.  But as between the Mini Champ and Rambler, I'd go with the Rambler.  I just can't deal with the idea of carrying around an orange peeler and cuticle pusher.

What you really need to do is get yourself a Manager.   >:D

I own a Manager, Midnight Manager, Rambler and the Swiss Mini Champ.   The mini champ to me is just a unique and really neat collectible.  As far as tools actually being used, the Manager is fantastic and my favorite to EDC for my keychain.  I do have a StayGlow Rambler that is pretty awesome, but I just love having the Pen the the Manager has.

I think you will be very happy with the Rambler.

I prefer the Minichamp. It is so small already that I don't feel the need for something smaller. In fact I hung a Ladybug from it and they both consist 5% of my keyring weight.
But even a Classic is a very capable SAK. And everything in between.

There are a couple of other 58mm knives between the Rambler and the Minichamp in thickness and tool selection. The order is somewhat like this:
Minichamp 8-blade, thickest version will be the one with Pen and lite scales.
Minichamp 7-blade.
Vagabond 6-blade.
Mate 6-blade.
Cavalier 5-blade.

You can read more here: http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Victorinox+58mm
I have managed to find all of the above by digging through the TSA-confiscated knife selection locally.
The Rambler is hard to beat for its tool variety and size, but having the others is nice too ;-)

minichamp have too many seldom used tools, rambler, maybe manager will be a better choice.

(all champ series except workchamp have unnecessary tools, workchamp is refined and big enough, i can build a hut with it in wilderness.)

I like the manager, just because I have no use for the toothpick, so I like the pen instead.  :tu:

If I had a rambler, it'd probably replace the minichamp on my keys.

Can I be annoying and say Vagabond? Got the awesome cut-and-picker blade, which is great for clamshell package opening, and the scary sharp emergency blade. Mine was made by HankSolon

I think my perfect 58 mm sak would
Be the pharmaceutical rambler ,which
Switches the spear point blade for the
Emergency blade and the nail file for
The cut and picker blade.now that would
Be excellent , but the chances of finding
One are pretty slim,as they were only
Made for the pharmaceutical industry.

Not that difficult actually. I bought one in February for less than $10 with international shipping of off eBay. There were two at the time listed from two different sellers. Both were marked Floxin on the shield side and Levaquin on the other. Search eBay for used Ramblers and if you find one, there are plenty of people here who are willing to help you out with buying it and shipping to the UK.

I vote rambler, can be had on the bay for dirt cheap and IMO just might be the best legitimate keychain tool out there.

I had both and had a bad time trying to decide which one to choose. I ended up keeping the Minichamp. I have already been able to use all of the tools. I could get along with the rambler (or the manager, by adding the same pen I had to install in the Minichamp), but I could regret later... So I am using the Minichamp and so far so good. It has been useful in a lot of tasks. I keep it in my small pocket in the front of the jeans.

I've carried a Rambler for quite a while now and it is perfect for my needs. I doubt I would use all the implements on the mini champ. Plus it's that much thicker than the Rambler...

I carried a Rambler for quite a while, but I find that the Drifter (a +B exclusive model) works even better for me. In alox scales, it comes in right at the thickness of a Classic.

There it is. Mine's in blue alox (mod job). It's the best of worlds for me with the pointy nail file, an emergency blade and the ruler/screwdriver to extend the Rambler tool set.
