A Few Military Centric MP600s.
on: June 30, 2013, 06:35:39 AM
Here are 4 military purposed MP600s. Two MP600 Sight tools, and two DET MP600 tools. One of the DET MP600 is a fake.

Yes, the second from the left is the fake.

A good indication your DET MP600 is not a Gerber...painted/silk screened USA on the handle.

The real one is stamped.

Another indicator that one is a fake...no removable REM Grit blade. The fake has a file instead.

The Fakes are on eBay all the time, often they have a BIN of around 40,- and are shipped from Asia.

My biggest issue with this fake...it tries too hard to be like the original. In other words, lots of fakes don't pretend to be anything else but a ripoff of a design. This one tries to part people of their money whilst making them think they got a steal of a deal. If you are not all that knowledgeable...you can get taken. The fake is painted black, not coated in black oxide. There are other differences...many are very subtle. On the other hand, the quality is surprisingly high for what it is. This is like the fake Crunch in respect to execution. At least the fake Crunch doesn't have Leatherman written all over it like this one does.

That actually looks like it's finished better than the Gerber, but maybe that's down to the paint vs BO.

it actually feels a lot less "robust" as compared to the authentic DET. it feels different when you're already holding the multitool

Darn, Chako, I was hoping to talk about the fake DET before you did :). I better hurry up and post my g301 review before you beat me to that, too :P. Alas, my fake DET is still in the mail. edit: haha nevermind, you talked about the fake DET already in 2010! Well, good to know I'm only three years behind the times.

Do the pivots/head  (edit 2: and I guess pivot isn't the right word... attachment points?) make it look like it's possible to replace the plier heads with a genuine gerber type? I can't imagine why I'd need a blast cap crimper... and if I did, the powerlock has one. But if I could replace it with a proper head (or hell, maybe even grind the included head down... but god that seems like a load of work for a cheap clone) I'd have incentive to grind the C4 spike into a #2 robertson head, which would actually turn the thing into a fairly useful multitool in Canada.

Looks like I just copped one. Came from a "top rated seller" on ebay outside of Asia. This would have been my first Gerber so I assumed the EOD was a predecessor to the DET. There are allot of them on ebay.
I had mod plans for it. Wanted to change out the spike for a v-cutter. The plier head is actually reasonable quality. You can use the cap crimpers on 02 bottles instead of an 02 wrench. The needle nose plier tip would have been just as good as my LM Wave for picking up used syringes that junkies leave lying around all over the place around town. In short a poor mans LM OHT.

I looked at this before purchase. This is where I got caught out. I guess its all part of the scam.

Just contacted the seller who maintains it is a real gerber and guess what you tube link he directed me to? The above link.
He is however going to give me a refund.

Good to hear you are getting a refund, but sucks you ended up with a fake.

Now, is a free fake better than no fake?

Man..that guy didn't even know he was reviewing a fake.

I paid 16 dollars for mine off of eBay. I knew it was a fake though, as I had done my research and the OEM ran around 100 dollars online at that time.

You should refer the seller to this...

Like I said. I'm not a Gerber guy. Never really have been. So to be honest I just thought it was poor quality control and I got lucky with a factory 2nd or something. The way these have been described on eBay was like it was a predecessor to the "DET" so I thought it was old stock. In fact the sheath had a thick layer of dust and some kind of fungus on it.

well, at least you are getting your money back. :-\  As this guy is possibly selling these in good faith I'd send him a link to this thread with lots of info about the fake DET: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,18527.0.html  However I would also be tempted to report him to Gerber, his selling of fakes and insisting they are real can only be damaging to their reputation.

Smurfing fakers... To the untrained eye (like mine) the fake one even looks like its got better finish... and then you find out it's just painted, hasn't got all the right tools... Just proves what we all know, if the deal seems too good to be true, it is

Luckily, we all have the amazing repository of multitool knowledge that is MT.O  :tu:
