Victorinox Classic? What's that?
on: July 03, 2013, 10:33:47 PM
Wow, did I ever come across a gem, here.

I picked up a long-discontinued keychain knife, a Kershaw 6500. Made in Japan, stainless steel with rosewood inlay, that pretty much copies the Classic toolset-- blade, scissors, nail file, but no tweezers or toothpick. Just a few differences in practice. It's quite a bit heavier than the Classic, easily double the weight or more. The nailfile has dual grooves on the back side for working the edges of your nails, and a double-crosscut main side. The blade isn't just sharp, it's SHARP, AUS-6A. It has a full-size keychain semi-permanently attached through a pivot. Both blade and nailfile are slightly thicker than those of a Classic.

But where it absolutely SHINES is in fit-and-finish. The polish, snap and solidity of this tool is flawless; nail nicks are well-placed and formed, it snaps open and closed with authority, and the blade grind and file surface are jewel-like. The scissors cleanly cut saran wrap, and have a Wenger-esque solid spring. It's a brushed stainless steel that feels just plain sturdy, and looks classy.  I think this is one of those tools that, while "inspired" by the Classic, outdoes it comfortably. Just excellent all around.

I'm sorry, it's not in thesame class as a classic. No tweezers, no SAD tip on the nail file. That SD tip on the classic fits most of the small phillip sscrews that hold everything together these days. And heavy and square is not near as pocketable as the smooth outline of the classic.

The classic is still the classic.

Surely this is a matter of opinion? And also, one could argue that unless you have handled both tools, you couldn't really compare?

Plenty of Vic classics aren't in the same class as the Classic. Like the Diplomat, the Broker, the Stainless Steel Classic, the Companion. Even the Classic isn't the same as the Classic SD.

Some of those older Japanese Kershaws are indeed flawless. And I wish Vic would do a real double cut file fully edge to edge as opposed to the textured file.

I happen to think that the Vic Classic SD file is perfect for fingernail maintenance.  :D

Wood and metal vs. plastic?! I think this one wins! Looks like a Vic Tomo. Also, in the alox classic you also loose the tweezer and toothpick.

This is the Tomo I was talking about.

Also, have a look at these, if you like the square shape:

http://www.victorinox.com/ch/category/Category/Tomo/1123?f=category&v=1/100/1123&m=add&

(Image removed from quote.)

Uhhh!

The tomo is like an solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Why do they want to make the classic bigger, with square corners, and loose the tweezers and toothpick, and most importunely, the SD tip????

Someone at Victorinox smoked something other than tobacco.

I guess it is a personal taste, but amongst the 'classic' size, I will still prefer my Victorinox Classic Broker  :D

That's nice but I get too much use out of the Classic SD's screwdriver.  :salute:

Nice find! It may compare ok in the tool department, but I personally prefer my alox classic.  :D
