The SUrge, is a bit on the heavy side, but if you need to rebuild civilization from scratch, this tool can do it. :multi:
Haven't gotten the Charge TTi yet

Both are excllent tools in thier own right, and have a cult following all on its own. My humble sugg. Is if you work around machinery ar in the trades, the surge is actually your tool. However if you just want something to carry everyday and use around the home the TTi actually most likely will fill the bill better. It just comes down to how much weight you really want to carry. At work I Regularly carry either the Core or surge, but do find the weight and bulk a little of a drain in the home.

I like the SURGE more than anyone on this forum. I highly recommend the SURGE to you. It is strong and has all the features other MTs leave out. By this I mean- scissors, awl, serrated blade, file, etc. The SURGE also has a great blade exchanger that allows you to switch from a diamond coated file (that can sharpen or touch up the main blade if necessary) and a nice woodsaw. But, I only use the provided saw for quick cuts. For real jobs I use large T shank blades. One of my favorite blades is the Bosch Progressor blades. They cut wood very well. Another feature to take note on is the stranded wire cutter. I have cut all sorts of tough wire and even galvanized fencing. If you have time check out the Sell Sheet on the SURGE- http://www.leathermanlibrary.com/thumbnails.php?album=68 IMO, the SURGE is the best MT ever! BTW, I depend on the SURGE at work all the time!

Toolman, here's the LINK if you want to compare the specs of the Charge TTi and the Surge. This may help you decide what to get.

For my tastes, between those two I'd pick the Surge. But that's partly because I don't like the "crimper" in the TTi jaws, and I'm not totally excited about S30v steel- it sounds a bit too hard and brittle for me. If the choice was between a Charge Ti (or Al) and a Surge, I'd probably choose the Charge.

I have used all of my S30v cutting tools to the max and I have never experienced chipping .. But, I am sure other people have.

Actually, for me the issue is more about ease of resharpening than worrying about chipping. I'm not an expert sharpener, and I find the softer steel less frustrating. ;)

ToolMan, I would prefer the TTi. My present EDC is TTi and i don't think I will change it in the years to come. It depends if Leatherman will introduce another model much better than the TTi.

If your are not concerned about the wieght and bulk go for the surge, its heavy duty and it has most of the tools. But if your looking for something lighter and less bulkier go for the charge, sturdy enought to be abused. I EDC a LM charge Ti.
Multitools are the best thing that happened to mankind since the invention of the wheel!

What they need to make is a surge SURGE TTi, with guthook, titanium handles, blasting cap crimpers and S30V blade. I'm sure LM123 would buy 10 of them on the spot :P

I agree with all of the other posts here about the two tools. I personally EDC a TTi. It's light, pretty much does everything I need it to do, and it looks pretty. I carry a multi pretty much everywhere I go, so something as big as a SURGE would just be too impractical for me. However, if I was looking for a heavy duty tool that would get a lot of abuse, I'd go the SURGE. The fact that you can replace the file and the saw to me suggest that LM are expecting you to wear those two tools out. It all just depends on what you plan to do with the tool.

I think the TTi is more "easy to use"...i'm only afraid for the weight of Surge....i'm a sound engineer and i work on the stage live in many places, with flashlight and more objects...if the leatherman is light i think is more confortable.

I've been engineering live shows for awhile now.  My honest advice is to get the Surge.  It will do everything you could want it to do and more.  From cutting tie lines on cable to assembling rack enclosures and working on rigging.  What kind of venues do you work?  I've been doing mostly Summer outdoor events for the past 6 years.  My Leatherman tools have really performed above and beyond.  I think you'll be happy no matter what you get, but the extra weight and heavy-duty nature of the Surge lend it more to hard use during gigs.  Let me know what you decide and how it works out for you.
