Everything is getting smaller, lighter, faster, stronger, and just generally more awesome.

I went looking for a great small umbrella, and...

Umm...

Okay, we have frickin carbon fiber and ultralight materials. There HAS to be a 'super-umbrella' out there... right?

Am I missing something?

I'm looking for something that can fold up to fit in a purse or similar size bag, maybe up to 8" long. Weight is less important. I'd like something that doesn't just crumple in heavy wind. Help?

Look for the 5.11 umbrella. Its not cheap but it's over built.

Well there's the full sized Unbreakable Umbrella ($230 :ahhh ) we discussed some time ago but I can't remember a more compact version.

I've been trying to find a good replacement for an old umbrella I found in yardsale for years now to no avail. That thing is solid, all steel frame automatic opening and a very clever design to hold/release the prongs with the opening button. It doesn't even blink at wind gusts that snaps the modern cheap plasticy ones (literally, I always see broken ones chucked in garbage bin after a rainstorm).

You'd think with all the fancy modern materials they'd make one that's just as good if not better (no I don't want one of the aforementioned people beaters), but even the expensive name brand like Coach, LV are just as cheaply made (granted they are fashion brands so quality isn't their concern).

BTW, Fulton make a good umbrella for reasonable money.  IIRC 50ft-trad had a couple of their folding versions, though I don't think they were as small as you are looking for.

Yup, I got some Fultons and they are good brollys. Not the kind of thing Lynn's looking for though, and even the Fulton's lose strength on the smaller models.

Here's a link anyway ... http://www.fultonumbrellas.com/index.html

Didn't realise this thread existed so thought I'd bring it back from its slumbers.

I just picked up a new Fulton folder having absent mindedly left my last one in a restaurant. That seems to be a bit of a pattern of behaviour from the reviews I've read !

Good brollies though - here with my Executive.

Megan is always amazed that I have never owned an umbrella in my life.  I have just never felt the need to have one I guess.  My Tilley hats and proper wet weather gear have always served me well enough, but then I have always done field work, so wet weather gear has always suited me better.  Perhaps if I had a job where I wore a suit or something I would feel differently, but trust me, no one is ever hiring me for my mind.

Tilley Hats are a good call. But I quite like to walk with a walking stick of some sort (I don't need one yet it's just preference) and an umbrella is almost a multitool for showery weather ... moreover being a glasses wearer I'm not spending more time wiping raindrops off them than I need to !

I do still appreciate a good brolly.  I keep one in the back of the car for unexpected downpours.

I need a walking stick but am in denial about it.  I thought about getting an umbrella that would work as a walking stick, but then I can't use it to walk when it rains.

I'd look awful silly walking in the rain, leaning on my umbrella....

Perhaps, but walking with a stick umbrella (they can be found) looks quite sensible ..

I guessing singing in the rain wouldn't be an option ?

Mine has had a good work out in the last couple of days while out walking the dog. ::)  To say it's been raining a bit hard would be an understatement.
