More details and photos later, but I wanted to share this now. I'm posting this from the Deep Cut section of the Shubie Canal. It doesn't get much prettier than this!

Beautiful scenery!
Am I right if I assume that the scenery is more beautiful in real life than in the photo? (it looks great in the photo, but I have never managed to take a picure in similar scenery that looks half as good as the real thing)

Beautiful scenery indeed. There's some nice photo opportunities here in FL also. Just got a new camera so we should be taking a lot more pics in the near future

Yeah, that is always the most beautiful part of the paddle. That section is only a few hundred yards long before you get into the open lake.
The amazing part is that this section was all dug by hand. This canal took almost a hundred years to dig, but allowed cargo to be moved inland before the railways were laid. Through most of the canal it just seems like any other river, but in this section you can really see the cuts in the rock.
I have some other photos I'll post shortly.

This is a shot of the rock- you can see even after all these years that someone went to an awful lot of effort to cut the canal out.

100 years is indeed a lot of work. There are piles of rocks all the way along it that don't look like much now but were houses that the workers lived in.
There's a lot of history in that canal.
Last week when I was out I also saw a bald eagle, but he flew off before I could get a photo of him. I'll get another chance- there are lots of them around here.
