Global Warming?
on: April 29, 2008, 12:03:27 AM
Do you guys think Global Warming is fact or a hoax?

I personally believe it is indeed true. After seeing an An Inconvenient Truth , it occurred to me that all the things Al Gore mentioned were becoming true in our world.

Actually the movie is quite interesting especialy the part they stole from the movie the day after. Ya know where they say they saw the Ice break but it actually came from the hollywood studio.

It kinda seems that there are too many scientists that can argue for and against it.

it occurred to me that all the things Al Gore mentioned were becoming true in our world.

True, but what are the reasons?  Did al gore mention that Antarctica is growing?

The earth is warming, it's been fluxuating ever since the planet was created.  I don't belive this current warming trend is because of humans.  If al gore and the rest really cared about humans polluting the earth, they should go preach in China first.

The earths' rotation and orbit around the sun isn't perfect, and it looks to me like gore is using it to make money (carbon credits ::))

I hope none of you mind, but I took the liberty of visiting another to answer this question.
Be honest,,,,,bot sides of this argument have filled it with so much CRAP, that this issue may be degraded to and urban myth.

I have read very convincing arguments for both sides, and while I tend to favor the cycle theory (that the planet has cycles longer than our ability to record, and this is the opposite end of the spectrum from the Ice Age) I also think that becoming more environmentally aware is logically the next step in our evolution, as well as making financial sense.  I see no reason why we can't all make better, less pollutant choices, and still be able to lead the lifestyles we've become accustomed to.

I'm not a tree hugger, and I like my car, but I turn off the tap when brushing my teeth, I turn off lights when I'm not in the room.  As the incandescent bulbs blow I've been replacing them with compact fluorescents and eventually those will be replaced with LED's.  When we move into a new house (perhaps next fall) I plan to start working on installing a set of solar panels.

Regardless of whether or not you believe in Global Warming, or even to the extent that you do, it just makes more sense to live as ecologically sound as possible.  Reducing waste and using renewable energy is good for the planet, and better for your wallet, because that's something you are going to actually see happen.

Good idea!  Is there an oil additive that I can use so that the smoke belching from the tailpipe has a nice green tint?

No, but you could tie a big green garbage bag around the tail pipe, change it when it gets full and drop them off at the local recycling depot!

I'm happy about most of the new "greener" trends. It's just makes sense to pollute less. :) At the same time, I'm not %100 sure about the whole global warming thing, theres too much money and politics involved for me to believe anyone. ::) I'm guessing both sides overstate their case quite a bit.

Responsible stewardship is the answer.  Take care of what you have in a responsible manner...  That's the answer.  Al Gore is not a scientist, he's a politician.  Politicians only know what those around him tell him, especially if it's what he wants to hear.

In the mid 1970's, the cover of Newsweek said, "Are we on the verge of the next Ice Age?".  That is because from the 40's to the 70's, the average temperature in the world had continued to go down.  You'll notice Al Gore's data talks only about the last 30 years.  So that means if you look at the average temp 60 years ago, it is the same as it is today.  I'd call that a cycle.

Besides, who caused the last Ice Age?  I don't think the dinosaurs were driving SUV's.

Well, considering that the last ice age started 40 million years ago and the dinosaurs disappeared 65 million years ago, I don't think it matters what the Dinosaurs were driving.  Most of them were herbivores and farted a lot but I don't think that had much influence either.
