Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Belt.
on: July 17, 2013, 08:48:37 PM
Yes, you read that right. I am not joking. Gerber has actually produced a BG Survival Belt. I came across this one off of eBay. Probably one of the more interesting BG items out there.

The BG Survival Belt is a 51.4" long nylon webbed belt with an aluminum tricked out buckle and a hidden zippered compartment.

Like all good Bear Grylls items, it is appropriately festooned with Gerber and BG symbols...just in case anyone ever wondered what is holding up your pants. You know....just in case.

Not only is it written both front and back of the buckle, you also get it on the belt itself. It wouldn't be a BG item unless you have a BG mini survival guide included.

The belt buckle has a hidden compartment. You just give the central part a little twist...

And pull off the cover to reveal the hidden secret water resistant compartment. On the inside of the cover, a signaling mirror. Inside the compartment, a bag of goodies. I wonder how long it will take some enterprising individual to turn this into a secret weed stash...dang. I bet it has already been done.

Now taking the little bag of survival goodies out, you can see that there is some room for some other items...albeit nothing large or bulky.

A closer look a the goodies bag. You will find the following items.

1. Snare wire
2. Fishing line
3. Fishing hooks
4. Snap swivels
5. Lead weights

If you flip the buckle over, there is also another secret hidden feature.

Yes, if you gently push the center part upwards, you get a small hidden Phillips and Flat driver. Of course, both sides feature Gerber and BG markings.

Surprisingly, the BG survival guide does not fit into the hidden zippered area.

So there you have it, one of the weirder BG branded Gerber items out there. In fact, this is a nice belt that will fit most people out there. The buckle isn't all that thick, and it does feature quite a few hidden tricks. All in all, not a bad idea for a survival kit.

The first words that came to mind when I saw that was "tada dada dada dada BATMAN!"

It is actually a pretty good consept. You will always have it with you (unless you leave home without your pants), and it wont take up any space in your pockets.

I've built and worn a few E&E belts in my time. The whole goal is to be as "gray" as possible; don't stand out or draw attention to yourself. I like this belt, but with the huge buckle and garish advertisements all over it? Pass. Now, if you were going to hang a bunch of other Gerber and BG stuff off of it, than it might be just the ticket.

I took a black sharpie to the white lettering on my Jansport backpack, because I found it too garish. That belt is... yeah, nah... I'll skip it.

As for the buckle becoming a stash compartment... I can neither confirm nor deny the potential for such use.

Maybe a silly question, but how does it function as an actual BELT?

As a belt...works like any other belt out there. I can confirm it holds up my pants nicely. I had to try it out. However with that said, it is going to be stored with all the rest of the Garish BG items.  :D

For urban survival, it does stand out a little too much for my liking.  Curiosity always kill the cat...

As for wilderness survival, I'd wish they would have put in a quality wire saw, a small small backup blade(I know it's gerber, but something like a SOG micron, and a small stick of ferro rod instead of the phillips/flathead.

I look forward to the Survival shower cap next... :D

Good grief, this BG stuff just gets more and more absurd by the day.  I'd ask the question, "who the heck would buy this stuff?", then I go to the shooting range and I see people wearing stuff that's every bit as silly, if not worse.

Good for Gerber for filling a market need....but SHEEESH!

If they made it sterile, I might buy one. And redo the fishing kit so it is something that works for me.

And along the way, probably rebuild it into a rifle sling... hmmm.... now I need to look for nylon web money belts.
