Fun read, thanks Jothra. It inspired me to give mine a bath and lube as the poor thing gets used a lot with no TLC.
Gabba gabba hey!!

Vicky got a thorough cleaning and lubing early on (after a nice dirt bath), and it made a huge difference. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that more use means more attention to cleaning.

You know that if Victorinox see a spike in the sales of the Huntsman,it'll be down to you and Vicky?

Cleaning mine brought back all the snap to the tools. It's now snappier than a snappy thing.

Well, maybe this time it won't be your fault, Kirky?  ;)

I know the challenge is over, but the newer Huntsman's corkscrew pulled a nail from the shed wall this evening. I wish there were a light in that shed so I could have taken a picture.

Roman Mythology would add Diana, goddess of the hunt, to the list. Usually considered the original 'Huntress'.
This bothers me more than it should, damn OCD. I was so worried that your Huntsman would be named Diana 'cause Diana is just a copy an imitation. The original is ARTEMIS. Please do not name an Original after a Copy.

Other Hunters:
Laelapse - the dog that never fails to catch its prey (except for the Teumessian fox, the prey that cannot be caught)
The various Leaders of the wild hunt: Wodan, Holde...

Now enough mythology!

Thanks Jothra for that fantastic read, you just might have cured me of my loathing for the cap-lifter and the can-opener. It's also good to see how much punishment those small, innocent looking beasts can take.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

When it comes to most of Greek and Roman mythology, I feel basically the same way. As far as I can tell, however, Diana had independent origins in Italy and only later became conflated with Artemis. This isn't too surprising, given the somewhat malleable nature of ancient Rome's mythology.

Besides, Wonder Woman (another Diana!) may not always work out in practice, but in theory she is one of the most interesting DC characters of all. That's the real reason Vicky's regular-carry replacement ended up as Diana.

On a less mythological (or comic-related) note, I can actually understand why a can and bottle opener are, on the face of it, not that important on a multitool—the reason I love them anyway is because they are basically just afterthoughts attached to tools I really want, like a prybar or a mini-slot/Phillips screwdriver. If all they could do was open bottles and cans, I would roll my eyes into the next county every time I saw them on a tool.

I love that people are still discovering this thread and finding it useful. I only started doing this on a whim. I never thought it would go anywhere.

I can't decide whether I hate you or love you. Reading this is gonna make go to bed way too late, as well as wanting me to find my dads old SAK and put it together with my wallet and phone in my pockets. Nice thread and excellent review. :D

For me, I LOVE the bottle opener. But then, I JUST opened a bottle of beer with a Climber.

I know, I know...challenge over. But is it ever really over?

Anyway,  this is a new one for me (and Diana the Victorinox Huntsman):

Where's the toilet paper key? I can't...oh.

Even though it's similar to Where's The Grinder Key Never Mind I Have My Rebar, I wasn't sure this would work. Those scissors are tough old biddies.

Oh my no. No-one in his or her right mind would steal this half-ply garbage. But, as I'm the only regular staff around here, I always draw the short straw when it's time to replace the toilet paper.

I cam here from the new hook thread to see how he damaged the hook from torque. Womder if he ever got that replaced or sent in for repair.

I'm not good at naming things but I think that Dolores -Spanish for "pains"- would be nice.
Please rock on, Jothra! Your reviews are great escapades IMO and they get better as time passes. Many thanks. :D :gimme:

PS: This sounds like a very promising crash-test

Ten years since the original thread and five years since it was last bumped.  Another post made me think of this thread.

It is a true MT.o classic and well worth the read, or even a re-read.

Thanks for bumping. I enjoy the real field tests folks do here.  My Huntsman is probably my most abused SAK but only because it’s from 2005. Was my brothers and made its way to me a few years later. I haven’t really used it in a few years. It’s seen some things, but not nearly as much as Vicky.

I wasn’t around in the days when this thread was new. But this has got to be one of the greatest threads in the entire history of MTO, or even the entire internet!

The tale of Vicky the Huntsman is truly the stuff of legends. I’ve read the entire thread twice since I discovered the forums here but, like an epic stories, the time has come to revisit it.

Thanks for the thread bump, I enjoyed every bit of it. Amazing what an SAK will tolerate and not be worse for wear.
