I'm not a knife expert so forgive me if this is a stupid question. Can you make a good quality knife using the metal from the leaf spring of a truck, van, etc.? Is the steel strong enought?

Yes you can, with a proper heat threat. Is hard, but is possible.

Carlos

without heat threatment is the steel brittle?

Not brittle, but too soft and bends.

A leaf spring knife will be fine mate, they still use similar steel in Nepal for the Kukri's, not to mention all the other indigenous knives made out of the stuff :)

As long as it's had a good heat treat, use it with confidence mate :)

It's fairly comfortable, but your pinkie hasn't got much to hold on to (but I've got fairly bigish hands) if you wraped it in paracord it'd be a nice wee user :)

Oh and it'd need a sheath first too :D

Who needs a sheath couldn't you just hold it in your teeth ??? :D I was thinking a paracord wrap would be good for it.

I think they don't heat treat they just get a discarted leaf spring and just shape it. will it be okay. will take a pic of the dadao when i return to the factory.

I feel very lucky to have them both!  :)

I need to take an updated picture of the oupa.  It has developed a nice patina.

No problem  :D The replica is a wee bit heavy, wonder how much wieght the original is.
Here are also pictures of the sword I had them made. Its okay but I bent it yesterday but got it straighten out quickly myself guess its only for light duty. Its 20 inches from tip to the handle. An inch wide. Got it for 71 Dollars.
