Carry an old or rare SAK?
on: May 03, 2008, 05:33:19 PM
As I said in another thread, I have recently bought a Vic Stag Hunter which is a SAK from the Safari series.  I also just the other day ordered a '57 Vic soldier, which is the older styled soldier with the fibre scales, (it was all Def's fault  :P) from Tim as it was listed at a price I just couldn't refuse.

I am planning on carrying both and will actually EDC the Stag Hunter for a while as I like the tool compliment and the serrated gutting blade it has will work well as a belt cutter in an emergency situation.  But what do you guys think about carrying these older and slightly rarer SAK's?  Would you still carry them as you would any SAK, or would you give it some "special" treatment?

I carried a 91mm Waiter Plus for awhile, but decided it was a bit too rare,so now it has a place of honor in my drawer queens.

If it were me it would receive special treatment. But it wouldn't be a safe queen though. I'd maybe make it my "special occasion" knife.

Nope clean it up to the point where it won't rust (but leave the pattina alone) put it some where completely dry, and only handle it while wearing rubber glove's!
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

 :D

I can't do that, it would be almost criminal to put it in a drawer.  :D

Such a thing of beauty should be shared with the world!  :D

Do you still carry any of your oldies/ rare ones?

I do use my old ones...but NOT the MINT 1941 soldier....
When I do I make sure I have in a safe belt pouch....
and if I handle , I also make sure to wipe before they go back
 to the safe hide out....

I just don't abuse them whem they are out...it's most to show off...

I'd be too afraid I'd lose a rare or otherwise "special" SAK... not that I lose a lot of stuff, but I'd always be thinking "Is it there?"  "is it still there?"  *taps pocket*

If your hunter is real stag and not the faux crap (ike mine) I'd drawer it if its near perfect.

If any knife is "previously loved" I'll put it in my pocket.   Some of the rare ones in tip top shape are laid to rest in the display cabinet.

I know that this isn't about a SAK but I have an OLD Camillus 72 that belonged to my Great Grandfather. When he passed away in 66 it became a "drawer queen".

What would great grandpa think if he knew his beloved Camillus was retired with so much life left in it. He would probably say "Boy get that knife out of that drawer and use it and have some fun with it."

Just to think about how many apples he peeled or splinters he dug out or flowers he cut. I can't really bring myself to carry it.

I have a mint 100th Anniversary SAK that I would lose first before I lost this Camillus.

I carry old ones and rare ones fairly often.  There are only a couple that I have that are drawer queens, like the NIB Mauser, but that's only because there are other models that I find more useful.  I carry my '44 Wenger "P" soldier on occasion, but again it just isn't as handy a tool to me than many of the others.

The models I carry most often are the custom layer mods.  They were specifically built with the tools I find most useful, so it only makes sense to carry them.

How are you liking the faux scales on that Safari Hunter Ben?  I couldn't stand 'em.  I love it with Bill's orange G-10 scales.

As Terry has said, they are the Faux ones and not the real stag so I am more than happy to carry it.

I actually quite like them.  They feel better than I thought actually.  I was expecting them to feel hollow and cheap but they are actually pretty solid.  For me, them being faux is a bonus in a way as I like stag scales and at least I know they can take the knocks of EDC without breaking or chipping.

The antique store dealer said that my champion was made in the mid 70s. I myself, am not a 100% sure.

Well if you go by the blade stamp, then it could have been.
