Oh okay, so you just bash the carbon steel bar against a piece of flint (like the ones shown in this picture here)

(Not meaning to oversimplify it at all. According to the one link Roadie provided there seems to be a fair bit of technique involved)

I've used flint and steel for a while.  There is technique but it's not rocket science.  You need char cloth.  The best way is to hold the char cloth on the steel and strike the flint on it.  You get a glowing ember in the char cloth.  You then put that into a nest of tinder and blow it to flame.  Once you have it down you have fire in 10 or 20 seconds.  Some strike the flint on the steel with the char cloth on the ground striking the glowing steel bits on it but the other way is better.

Yes. In traditional Flint & Steel the sharp edge of the flint scrapes tiny pieces of steel from the striker which ignites into sparks. The sparks produced are relatively low temperature (yellow) and requires a prepared tinder like Charcloth or Tinder Fungus to catch.

With Ferrocerium rods it is the components of the rod itself that is scraped off and ignites into a high temperature spark (white hot). There is actually no need to use any steel to cast sparks off a Ferro rod...any sharp edge will work, even broken glass.

Cool, I didn't know that!  :)

....I also didn't know there was such a thing as "tinder fungus." I'd accuse you of making it up, but I see there are several auctions on eBay for the stuff.  ;)

Tinder fungus. Wow, what will they come up with next?

There are several materials that have been used.  Tinder fungus is one of them.  To catch an ember you need this or char cloth.  To make char cloth take some old cotton material.  Place it in a closed tin, Altoids box will work and put it in a fire.  You don't want the material to catch fire but to char black.  When done right the material is completely black but won't lose it's material texture.  This is what you use to catch the spark and start an ember.  You then place it in the center of a tinder nest.  Many materials will work for a tinder nest.  I have even used toilet paper.  There are various natural materials or frayed jute string works for the nest.  Once in the nest you blow on it.  Hold it above your head while doing this if you don't want to suck smoke and blow on it to catch the ember to flame.

I lust.  I have a couple of flint and steel kits.  Would love one of those.  So how could one get one?

Contact Swissbianco/Roger. You can't get them directly, he helped me obtain them.

Brunner Feuerschlagmesser (Fire Striker Knife)

Thanks to Roger (Swissbianco), I am the owner of the first two of these custom knives to make it to the US.

These are new production Soldiers with the current “Swiss Made” tang stamp and no year stamp.

The knives were commissioned by Horst Brunner who is the author of the book Feuer und Feuerschlagmesser.

A Mr. Fischlin made the special liner and Striker and his touchmark is the small fish struck onto the side of the Striker. The knives were assembled at the Victorinox factory.

Each Feuerschlagmesser came with a small piece of prepared tinder fungus and a flint.

Any word on the Farmer version of this yet mate ???
