Swiss+Tech question - where are they made?
on: September 06, 2013, 06:42:08 PM
I've been a fan of Swiss+Tech products for about 20 years now and was wondering, where exactly are they made today. The reason I ask is I noticed that a bunch of their Utili-Keys are sold from China now on fleabay.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

As far as I understand:
Swiss+Tech is an American Country with the only relation to Switzerland is its name that now produces in China.

Sorry, if that sounds spiteful, but I dislike any Company with Swiss in their name and not being from Switzerland, its simply dishonest.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

The manuals are available on their site as PDFs, there country of production is given. The stuff is produced in China, including the Utili-Key.

Etherealicer: +1, it's misleading and rather naughty.

They do say this on their site though:
Quote from: Swiss+Tech
With its introduction in 1996, the Swiss+Tech® Micro-Tech™ 6-in-1 represented a quantum leap in the art of tool making. This compact, easily transportable tool combined genuine Swiss craftsmanship with American innovation to create a new category of patented consumer products -- Key Ring Tools.

I don't think China+Tech would sell very well.

I believe the guy who started the company and designed the original tools was Swiss.  As I understand the story, and I could easily be mistaken is that he had emigrated to the US and originally manufactured them through various US based companies.  Then, as usual the company became successful and started trying to maximize profit, keep costs down while maintaining a price point and one of the best ways to do that is manufacturing overseas.

Some of the tools, like the Utili-key for example are actually simplistic enough that you'd never be able to tell the difference between a China made one and a US made one if the origin point wasn't stamped into it.

Then they started slapping "Swiss Tech" on every piece of crap plastic keychain wholesaled out of China and diluted the brand so badly it's not worth much any more.

Yes, pretty much.  The core tools like the Utili-key, Skrewzall and Micro Technician series are still as good as they ever were though.

Pretty well all the plastic gizmos are trash, or at least the ones I've encountered were.
