Don't use Tapatalk to host pictures
on: August 12, 2013, 02:59:28 PM
They are very bad and unreliable at storing them.

In the last few months I noticed on a couple of different forums that some pictures would take a lot longer to load or wouldn't load at all. Some would later reappear but others were gone for ever. When I checked where these pics were hosted in almost all the cases it was tapatalk. ::)

About two weeks ago, on 26th of July, while I was searching for some info on a multitool I discovered that at least 9 Eric's how to threads were missing all the pictures. We decided to wait and see if it may be a temporary glitch but they are still missing.

I know other hosting services have some glitches too but this seems particularly bad with TT. If you're posting from a mobile device it's safer to attach the picture then host it with them, just to be on the safe side. ;)

These are just my personal observations and not the official forum rule. :D If you want to use TT for hosting pictures, we won't stop you.

When I first installed Tapatalk on my phone, I used it to host pics.  I found that it took too long to upload to it at times, so I just went with attaching instead.

I think I used Tapatalk once or twice for photos because I hit the wrong button, but the forum is generally best.

Give us your pics- we don't mind.  :D

If under tapatalk I choose to attach the photo to the forum it automatically appears at the bottom of the post. Can someone recommend me a better way to upload photos from my phone?

Uploading to the forum is perhaps the best way to post photos from your phone.

It's the simplest. And most secure option as you don't have to fear that the photo will ever disappear due to poor outside hosting service as it will be directly connected to the post and MTO.

For the guys using photobucket there is an app (named photobucket app ;) ) that lets you upload your pics to photobucket and copy the img code directly from it.

I would like to attach them to the forum it is just that the photos are automatically at the bottom of the post if I do. I still need to use the Tapatalk hosting if I want text after a picture.

In that case, Photobucket (or another photo hosting site) might be a better idea than Tapatalk.

I can also tell you imageshack isn't much better. I go through my images sometimes and some always mysteriously disappear, the icon is there but actual image is dead.

Image hosting is a pain for sure.  Im still using photobucket, but I cant say I love it.  I have backups of all my pics in case there are issues.  I wish I would have jsut attached them all directly to the forum posts to start with.  Going through my mod threads now and doing that would be quite a nightmare...argh

Yes, I've noticed that too. Most of your older posts/reviews are missing pictures (imageshack hosted). Even the ones posted as early as last year. :( If you have them stored somewhere, feel free to PM me the links to them or email me the pics and I'll fix that.

There's always the Multitool.org Gallery which even has an Android app.  I'm not sure about Apple though.

I do a LOT of posting from tapatalk via my phone and iPad. It's two-three extra steps to load to a site then post.

I know tapatalk isn't the best but it sure is easy. I am constantly pissed of how long it takes sometimes and often their server gets hung up and won't upload at all.

I am still trying to figure out the situation with the missing images. Kind of crappy.

I've all but abandoned Tapatalk for anything other than a quick "what's happening" or brief reply anyway. When using my phone to upload a pic, I will use the browser to access the full website - even though the screen on my Blackberry Bold 9790 is really quite small.

Tapatalk sucks!

In that case, Photobucket (or another photo hosting site) might be a better idea than Tapatalk.

They really messed it up with the last interface "upgrade" and don't allow you to download your whole albums anymore ??? unless you pay them for it (and I have a long list of complaints about PB somewhere here ;) ) but they are still among the more reliable ones for keeping your pics up years after they were originally posted. And the PB app makes it really easy to upload and post pictures on the go.

Yeah, except that when I go to look at your pics on my iPhone, it replaces the whole thing with an ad that unless you've got fingertips like hawk talons you can't help but click on.

I don't know how it compares, but I use my Google Drive account to store most of my pictures. Easy uploading from my phone and it provides you with a link to suitably re-sized pictures good for posts.

Must be an Apple thing. :P I never get any adds using the Android version.
