crossing a croc infested river

Distances in the Cape.  in km from the Musgrave Roadhouse. Cairns to "The Top" adds up to 1020km, 700 of which are corrugated dirt roads. And tht's just one way... you have to get back again too.

an example of the said "dirt roads"

This is "Fruit Bat Falls" a popular swimming hole along the "Old Telegraph Track" that is a popular but challenging 4WD route up Cape York.

Alas most of the "Tele Track" was beyond the capability of our vehicle. and it is actually a fairly capable 4WD, essentially a Mitsubishi Pajero with a van body. The main problems were that it was heavily loaded and does't have a snorkel. Several of the river crossings are well over a meter deep.

A typical "easy" creek crossing

An example of a more challenging water crossing

and then there's the infamous "Gunshot Creek"

We visited a couple of WWII aircraft crash sites, this one was a DC3 that crashed in 1945

Amazingly one of our group found this mostly buried in the dirt path outside the fenced area.

God knows how many thousands of people have visited the site in the last 68 years and it only came to light now.

This wreck was a Bristol Beaufort torpedo bomber

The final few kilometers to the tip are along a narrow track through dense rainforest

This is what it was all about

My mate took this photo purely to illustrate the updraft at the Castle Hill lookout in Townsville... honest

She busted him...

That is a very nice updraft if I do say so myself! :D

That looks like an amazing trip!

Don't let the environmental people or those ruffians at Rand-McNally see that you broke the end off the continent!

Not my video but this is a very good one to get an idea of what the Old Telegraph Track is like.

I don't have 30 minutes to watch that now, but I think I'd hate to be pulling a trailer along that!
