A confession
on: August 23, 2013, 06:55:39 PM
In all the years I have run this site I have always tried to be as fair as possible.  I'll admit that sometimes I was fairer than others, but that was simple human limitations.  This time, I have purposely strayed over the line and I ask your forgiveness.  Let's start with a photo.

Some time ago MTO was homeless.  Our server company was shutting us down and treating us like crap, and we had to do something before we lost it all.  I'll admit I was at the point where I almost let them flush it all.

Then there was a ray of sunshine as a new server company took us in and offered us a new home.  They looked after us, helped us set up all of my sites and eventually even slipped us some extra resources they weren't using, free of charge, just to help keep Multitool.org online.  I have to say, I was hesitant at first to work with someone named Guido, but he's turned out to be an exceptional fellow and a great help to us.

You are probably wondering what all of this has to do with this OHT.  Well, this OHT is one that Leatherman sent us to give away to a member here as part of our 7th Anniversary Special.  This one is in my posession now, and won't be given to an MTO member.  That's right, I am misappropriating a donated prize.  That is very much wrong, but I am doing it anyway.

It will be a gift to Guido, as a thank you for all of his help, from all of us.  I have been trying to get my hands on a good tool for a while to send to Guido, and the OHT is perfect.  He manages a server farm, so having instantly accessible tools could come in handy, but there's more to it.  Last year Guido (who is younger than me by the way) was told by his doctors that he had some growths on his arm that might be malignant, and that he might lose his arm- if he was to survive at all.  As a fairly young guy with a couple of small children (one already, plus another on the way) this was devastating news, especially to our own Whoey, who has known and worked with Guido for years.  Luckily the news was eventually good, the growth was surgically removed and there were no signs of any cancers.

The One Hand Tool was a perfect fit- not only as a useful tool, but also as a reminder of what could have been- he may have been stuck with only one hand for the rest of his life.

That's the story.  I tried buying an OHT to send him, but some mailman somewhere along the line decided they needed it more than Guido or I did, so I am stealing one from the MTO coffers.

You may begin throwing stones now.

From the read, if it is not for Guido and his team, we probably won't even be here, so this is a well deserved prize for the random kindness and generosity.  Thank you!  :tu:

I don't throw stones, but I did mail you one. A mailman must have stolen it.

I hope Guido likes the OHT  :tu:

This is the best misappropriating that I've ever seen!!   :tu: Grant for giving this to Guido.  I don't think anyone here will be upset at all that this didn't go to a member, and if they are.  :twak:

An excellent decision, and very honest of you to make that decision public. But given the circumstances, I doubt anyone will have a problem at all with what you are doing.

I am definitely OK with it, we can consider it donated to all 5000 members, then gifted to Guido.
I would say that every member pitched in 1.6 cents (US)  to buy a thank you gift for Guido.

I'm glad you all think this is worthwhile.  I never doubted you would, but I still hate taking something away from you all, no matter the reason!

Oh, and apparently I got one of the details wrong- the growth has not yet been removed from his arm yet, he's apparently taking meds to shrink it as much as possible.  I imagine it will have to be removed at some point, but I'm not a doctor.  :D

Oh yeah, and don't anyone tell him- I want it to be a surprise!  :D

I don't consider this being taken away from us, rather that is an overdue payment from the MTo coffers for services rendered. Damn good call on this one Grant, and please pass on our best wishes to our unseen saviour from all of us who benefitted from his good deeds :salute:
