Vic serrations help!
on: May 17, 2008, 02:03:49 AM
Well, I tried to sharpen the serrated blade on my beater SwissTool. I really messed it up. The points are barely showing anymore.. Any idea on what I should do?

Either use a sharpening rod or get a coarse stone and get comfortable and grind them off.  I just did it with my OHT.

Do you still want the serrations? if you don't then either sharpen them on a rod or corner of triangular stone as it is, or sharpen them away altogether. If you do then it's a bit of hard, you need a rod shaped stone that's same size as the scallop and restore them (dremel with chainsaw sharpening stone works well).

A Spyderco Sharpmaker is the answer . Victorinox blade angles are the same as the sharpmaker so you get some very good results . Heres a pic of my RS blade thats been sharpened a good few times

The RS plain edge which has been sharpened loads of times . I sharpen it often and dont allow it top get too blunt . Its easier to keep it shaving sharp and only takes a few strokes on the White stones .

And last is the serrated blade on my std Swisstool

Its hard to believe they have seen much use but with the right sharpening method its possible to keep them looking almost new .

It makes you wonder  Did he bring the sharpmaker out before his own range of knives ?
I know without the sharpmaker I would have messed up the serrations along time ago .

Looking at my photos you can still see the factory grind marks although faint now it still goes to show although I've sharpend the RS blades alot , not that much metal has been taken off ,  Mainly because I didnt need to re-profile .

What do you do to the "back" of the blade? Cos i assume a burr of some description will build up

Ryan...

You just give the reverse of the blade a quick swipe over the stones to wipe the swarfe away :)

Dunc...

I think they made the sharpmaker first , but don't quote me :)

Your quite right  :D I should have mentioned it  :-[  Spyderco recommend 3 strokes on the serrations to 1 on the flat side . I tend to do about 10 on the serrations and 1 or 2 on the flat side but very gentle and then a strop on my jeans or belt . I also use a 12X magnifyer to look at the edge to make sure its right .

Cheers Dunc, I think I should get a sharpmaker, they do seem very good. Maybe i'll see what it's like at the meetup and decide then :)

Yup- Spyderco's old motto used to be "First we made things sharp, then we made sharp things."
